Default LS6 vs. 6.0 liter truck heads -- flow numbers inside

A pair of 6.0l heads showed up today at the shop. It was the first time we had a chance to look at them compared to the LS1/LS6 head.

There has been alot of talk on how the heads compare to the LS6 castings. The intake and exhaust ports are VERY similar to those of the LS6 head, but the combustion chamber is shaped like a LS1 casting (but only larger).

I didn't have time to CC the intake/exhaust runners or the combustion chambers on them. Hopefully, I might have some time tomorrow to do that.

Here is a graph on how the 6.0l heads compared to LS6 heads (stock vs stock):

LS6 vs 6.0l

6.0 flow numbers

LS6 flow numbers

As you can see, the 6.0l heads have awesome low/mid-lift numbers, while the LS6 heads shine past .500 lift. Patrick G had mentioned this awhile back after Judson (SAM) had worked on a few sets in Houston. The 6.0l heads would make a great street cylinder head with some minor porting, as long as you can get the compression back to around stock with some milling. The LS6 heads look like a great choice for those with a huge lift solid (or hydraulic) roller.

It will be interesting to see what happens after some porting. The heads are shipping out to Craig @ GTP tomorrow so he can work his magic on them.

Thats a great comparison.. I know for sure I am getting 6.0L heads on.. I have to decide if I want to drop the compression for boost or mill the head out of them for NA..

I'm missing the difference between these... Is it the Flow pressure that is important because that is the only real difference I see. The corr CFM seems real simular.

Jason

How do the 6.0L heads flow on a 4" bore. I'm just wondering if the combustion chamber design for the 6.0L is a disadvantage being flowed on a bore it wasn't meant for.(even though its just a little)

Maybe you could flow both heads on a 4" bore to see if the difference between the two is less. I still think the LS6 will outflow it but, maybe the 6.0L will close up the gap some.

Good work!

John, I didn't flow them on a 4.0" bore because these heads are going a stock bore motor. I would be interesting to see how they do though. I'll see what I can do tomorrow.

That is great info. You wouldn't have that same info for stock LS1 heads and 5.3 heads would you? I'm sure that there are many of us that would like to see how the 5.3 and LS1 heads compare in stock form.

Yeeeeahhhhh.....
We need a massie head shootout. Every stock Ls1 based head and then a ported version of each. Maybe even on stock bores and then on bigger bores also.

I have this over in my thread, but I stole your numbers, and put them into the spreadsheet. If you have any more sheets, please post them....

I would also like to see as shootout on the heads.

I cant wait to see what GTP can do with the 6.0L heads.. Perfect to help with big cams low end loss and should build up quite nicely..

J-Rod, that flow sheet comparison is really not an accurate way to compare two heads at all and is misleading. Different flow benches etc and not to mention flow numbers do not tell the whole story.
