Default Lunati/Morel lifters

Having a slight dilemma.

Car needs past emissions. Getting a stock cam to put in and cats to toss on. No big deal, fairly easy swap if the valvesprings aren't involved.

Now...are the Lunati lifters the same size as stock lifters? I keep reading they are a bit taller.
Will the 5/16 dowel work to hold them up? Or do I need to invest in 16 pen magnets??

Also...running a stock LS1 cam (base circle too big?) with those lifters for a few miles going to hurt anything?? Just enough to get an emissions tune and get the emissions done.

Thanks in advance!!!

How big is your cam? I have a 228 cam I intend to put in my car for driving around So. Cal., and I was going to try Rhoads lifters to get through the smog check.

Swapping cams for each emissions check seems to be a lot of work. Since you're tearing into the engine, I'm wondering if there is a better, more permanent, solution.

I know they are taller. There was a comparison photo in one of the threads, you may be able to find it with the search. Also, if you can't, PM Chris Straub, he can probably answer your question for you quicklly.

From the PR cup to the roller, the Lunati/Morels are 2mm taller than OEM. Not sure on the dowl rod question, but given the pre-load requirements of the Lunati/Morels vs. OEM, I would swap your PR's for an OEM set.

No way it would pass.
Having done several cam swaps, this one would be a piece of cake. Kinda sucks, but I don't mind working on the car. 4-5 hour job, little bit of money for coolant and oil. Not much of a loss to me to be able to legally drive the car.

We have to pass emissions every 2 years. And there are lots of rumors that say we won't have it at all soon.

Basicly what I need to know is if the dowels will work with the Lunati/Morel lifters? If not, best way to keep them up....pen magnets?

The dowels should hold them up. If I remember correctly, the roller of the lifter sits on the dowel, and that position will be determined by the cam lobe. I don't think the extra 2mm should change anything.

You're correct about the cam spec. That's never going to pass.

There are two sections of the lifter machined to the bore, in between there is a cutdown in the lifter OD. That is where the rod sits, not under the roller. The rods go in the lifter oil galley so they fit right where the oil inlet hole is on the lifter.

Those are the same lifters I have and a 5/16 dowel rod worked for me.

That is what I needed to know, thanks.
Did you make it yourself?

I have read all the instructions on how to make one...but I want to make sure I get it right.
Any info would be great. Thanks again!

I just went a bought two dowel rods from Wal-mart. Be sure to spin the cam a few times so the lifters go up in the trays.

You didn't do anything to them?? Just as they were when you bought them?

I thought I saw something about sanding a side down.

Here is what I did to mine. Not the lifters you mentioned, but I saw 5/16 dowels and that's what I did:
