Thunder Racing forged 346ci solid roller - 460hp/418tq
Damn, it has been a long time coming. Just a quick rundown on the history of this whole setup:
I had originally installed this motor the week after the Thunder Shooout (first week of November). We got the car running, but it was smoking bad on startups. So, I pull the heads off and notice the heads were cracked around the spring seats, leaking oil into the intake ports. The valveguide clearance was very loose too, so I sent the heads back off to GTP for new guides and to re-weld up the spring pockets. Almost 3 months later, I get them back. Needless to say, I missed my car. lol It was well worth the wait now though.
Here is a quick rundown on the motor:
-JE forged pistons (3.905" bore)
-Luanti Pro-mod rods
-stock crank
-Federal Mogul rod and main bearings
-JE file-fit rings
-GTP stage 2 5.3ltruck heads (11.5:1 compression)
* ISKY 1.55" valvesprings (265lb. seat/575lb. open)
* Manley titanium retainers and locks
* ISKY 7.681" pushrods
-Thunder 240/236 .592/.592 111lsa solid roller cam
-T&D rockers/Crane solid lifter
-Ford 30lb injectors
-BMR k-member/a-arms
-ARP head studs/stock GM head gaskets
Flow#s on the heads:
GTP stage 2 5.3l flow numbers
Shane and I installed the motor last night in 2 hours, but we still had to bleed the brakes this morning. I took it for a quick ride around the
block after this and damn it felt good! I was very anxious to dyno it,
so we strapped it down for some pulls.
452.2rwhp/407.3rwtq through the cutout! I was very happy to say the
least, but it wasn't enough.
Time to try open headers now. lol This resulted in 460.0rwhp/418.2rwtq!
Dyno graphs:
Cutout open - 452/407
Open headers - 460/418
Dyno videos:
Cutout open
Open headers - ignore the writing on the back of the car, I have some a$$hole friends
I was extemely happy with how the #s came out. Not bad at all through a Moser 12-bolt w/ 4.56s, 3.5" driveshaft, and a stock flywheel! The motor has no miles on it and it does need the A/F ratio leaned out some (12.0:1). I will take care of the breakin miles driving to school/work
and have Geoff lean it out some before heading to the track. It might pick up a few more from this.
The car did peak a little lower than expected, so we will try tightening up the lash some and more than likely, going to a bigger cam.
Dyno #s are great and all, but I live for track times. I will have some this week, weather permitting. It went 11.25@121 w/ stock heads
and the TR230 cam. I have added a ton of power and have taken out around 70lbs with the k-member,etc. So, I have high hopes for some
good times Friday. I will also be relocating my battery to the trunk and installing a Walbro 255lph fuel pump to be on the safe side as well
before heading to the track.
Here are some pics from the build up:
JE pistons
1.55" ISKY valvesprings, Manley titanium retainers and locks
Intake port
Exhaust port
Checking piston to valve clearance
T&D rockers
Motor, ready for install
Motor, ready for install (2)
Luanti Pro-mod rods
Coil Relocation
Moroso plug wires
Comp Adjustable timing set w/ KWIS chain
Front cover installed
I'll have some sound clips up this week. It really does sound sweet through the Hooker catback.
Big thanks to Geoff@Thunder for all his help in this buildup and Shane for helping me get the car road ready again yesterday. I owe you guys many 12-packs.

Absolutely badass Jason! It looks like the wait was well worth it
Get a bigger cam in there after the motor gets broken in

sweet #'s can't wait to see your results at the track. if you can post some #'s with full exhaust hooked up {no cut out} after you get some miles on it. good luck and glad it's running again

Re: Thunder Racing forged 346ci solid roller - 460hp/418tq
Soo... How long before you sell this one and go back to another stock block only to do another solid roller conversion?
Awesome setup. This is along the lines of what I have planned, I just gotta get all the rest of the weak links in the drivetrain fixed. A solid roller setup w/stock rear end would be kind of a mute point.

Re: Thunder Racing forged 346ci solid roller - 460hp/418tq
Thanks Fenris!
destroyerSS: The Hooker catback flows extremely well. On my old stock head setup, it only lost 2-3hp/tq from opening the cutout.
xaon: lol, not anytime soon. I have a rollbar in the car now. That was the reason I sold the last one. Since I ended up putting the rollbar in, I saw no reason not to go back to it.

BTW, thanks for the help today bleeding the clutch and messing with the exhaust. And, tell Beth the seat is in and she can go for a ride anytime she likes.

How does that setup idle? Do the solid roller setups generally idle better than the hydraulic equivalent? I'm pretty sure a solid roller is in my future. Congrats on the results

Jason, it's not really a suprise anymore that your car makes a **** ton of power
Maybe one day you can make as much power as the "other" hydraulic setups we've been hearing about

Re: Thunder Racing forged 346ci solid roller - 460hp/418tq
Thanks for the congrats!!
Jon, yes, a solid does have better street manners than an equivilant hydraulic roller. This is, for the most part, due to the seat timing of the cam.
Matt, lol, 102 runs on the dyno does classify as being a dyno *****.
Josh, I'm very happy with my "low" dynoing solid setup.
Joseph, I'll be attending the shootout. Hopefully, I'll have time to put a little TNT kit on it.
BTW, it was "Rice Boy" that they wrote, among others thing, on the back. My first car was a '90 Accord that has NAAAWWWSSS on it. That's where they got that from. lol Can you tell my car was just a little dirty?

Jason if I'd known you would be home to answer e-mails all night I would have told you to come to the club with us. I'm wasted and will prabably have to burn the clothes I'm wearing before Beth smells the perfume on them, but damn was the stripper fine. And she wore glasses to boot. I was in heaven.
For the record it took me 15 minutes to type this post and I'm still not sure of the spelling.

Nice numbers Jason. I'm pretty sure you will get the more important number out of the car as soon as you get to the track.
BTW, where is your A/C? Is it in the attic next to GTS SS's A/C and my power steering?
