Default Dave Hill's comments on the upcoming C6 powerplant

Most of this isn't internal engine, but check out the last few points.

Here is what Dave Hill had to say about the C6 @ the 5oth in Nashville:::

Basically here is the run down.
A blue z06 with the CF hood will be the last C5 built in 2004.

The C6 will be unvailed in Detroit in Jan 04. The factory will re-tool and tha C6 will be in production for the 05 model year.

The C6 will have a longer wheelbase and shorter overall length.

The C6 will have a compass.

The C6 will have heated seats.

The C6 will have more of a dual cockpit interior.

The interior will have less black and be lighter like the 50th models.

There will only be a coupe and vert for 05

06 will have an FRC z06 with 500 HP .

Engines will continue to be small block PUSH ROD motor with only 2 valves.

Headlight will be intergated.

Passenger side interior air vents will adjust vertically and horizonally.

Seriously, it should be interesting to see what happens between this car and whatever the Viper will be at that time...

Unless the C6 Z06 has at least a 7 liter motor it is going to be very difficult to make 500 hp in a production factory vehicle running a two valve set up.

Are you assuming the intake and heads will flow the same as the LS6? Advances just get better and better with every model.

I'm making over 500 (crank) hp in my lil ol 5.7L engine......

Don't be surprised to see better flowing heads/intake and of course you will be seeing a larger engine....closer to 6.4L from what I've heard? 500hp should be very very doable IMO.

Why does everyone insist that overhead cam is so much better?

The truth is with the cam profiles required for passing EPA emissions, there is no real advantage to overhead cams. They shine when race style lobes need to be spun to very hi rpm. Stock v8 motors dont spin those rpms and dont have abusive lobes. So keep mine Pushrods! Weak link on any performance motor is valve springs and both style motors have them!

I heard the new small block will have DUAL UNDERHEAD cams.... one cam will run the exhuast and the other will run the intake valves...the engine stil has only two valves per hole, however..

...I dont beleive this has been tried before and sounds like a great idea....

440 rwhp thru a M6 in a C5 gives you right at 500 hp, if you use a 12% drivetrain loss. This is the standard which MTI uses and mathematically works out to be pretty accurate when tested at the track.

Your 346 may make 500 hp, but I bet it doesn't idle anywhere near stock nor will it be able to pass emissions and the sound levels are not what a manufacturer would deem appropriate for mass production.

I don't think the dual cam is going to make the cut. What you will most likely see is two things some form of Variable cam timing (VTECH for the V8) and some form of DoD (Displacement on Demand). Also, look for increased displacement, and some improvements on the cylinder heads and intake manifold.

"Headlight will be intergated."

I may keep my c5 because of this. Pop-up lights were one of the things that sold me on it. I fell in love with them first on my dad's Porsche 928 and later on my RX7. I wish the Camaro had them but it's a cheap car so it was a good place to reduce cost by not having them.

Yeah, I know the reason is supposed to be that the integrated lights save weight but I think it has more to do with cutting production costs, complexity, and reducing warranty claims.

Also popup lights were used on many cars originally due to headlight height laws.

Law said lights had to be so many inches high from ground. The designers wanted low sloping hood profiles, and with integrated lights they would have been too low. Sooooooo, bring out the slope nose cars of the 80s, and the popup lights to go with them

06 will have an FRC z06 with 500 HP .

[/quote]

What does FRC mean?

I remember reading 6.3L for the C6 ZO6.

I wonder if the base engine will be the LS6?

I go by what seems to be a more universally used standard of 15%, but not a big difference.

No it doesn't idle near stock, but put my cam in a 6.3/6.4L engine like the one coming out, and it would idle much better. Add real mufflers and cats which I don't have, and I'm sure it'd be very tolerable.

All they are going to do is increase the size of the Z06 cam to a 214/222 or so most likely for usage in a bigger engine. Add that to better flowing heads and hopefully a better flowing intake, and 500hp should be cake.
