Default Which Cam?TR224, 224R, 228R?

Am planning a H/C swap into my 01 WS6 T56 w/ 55k miles. The car is a DD but I have a truck for work so I only drive it after work. Has lid, K&N,bellows, smog legal headers(until I can afford some LTs), and an SLP loudmouth. In the very near future I will get LTs, pulley, and TB.

I have decided on the stage 2.5 5.3L heads from TSP and will use new gaskets, bolts, oil pump, double roller chain ect.

Cant decide on cam...from TSP I can get the 224R(224R/224R-.581/.581) or 228R(228/228-.588/.588) wiht the kit which I would prefer...but I have heard alot of good things about the TR224(224/224-.563/.563). I want a 112lsa because I like a choppy idle.My choice as of now is the 228R. Anyone think this would not be as good as the TR224 or 224R?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

They should all dyno pretty close with the 228R being about 10rwhp higher.

between those 3 , i'd start with the 228, then a year later it'll bore you to death, then you'll want bigger, better, badder. at least thats what i did, lol

I planned to get a 228r with stock heads, it seems like a very nice cam they offer. But now I might go custom and get something like a 228/232.

I am going crazy myself and wanted to just buy a cam package to get it all in one purchase as well.

TR224 112 here and love it. Bigger only better if you plan to use it. 228 would be great too. If you drive it after work, like me for fun, the street manners mean alot vs top end power that you can rarely use, especially with a LM. The noise probably draws plenty of attention. Notice I run BorlaMouth now, and for that reason.

TR224 114 here and love it also. The only thing I would change is I wish I had gone with a 112 LSA for a little choppier idle. I can't speak for the other cams, but the TR224 makes great power under the curve. Very street friendly.

my tsp 224r on a 112 made excellent power, and sounds incredible, wit full bolt ons cam and tune i made 382 and 373 on a mustang dyno, so figure rigt at 400 on a dynojet, not many people making 400 rwhp cam only, tsp ftw

Since you're in California, I hafta ask how you expect a 228R to pass emissions?

228/228 112 LSA has +4 Degrees overlap at .050, about 8 more than is usually recommended for emissions duty. Usually the recommended max is a 224/224 114 LSA.

I did see you were also wanting LT's so, perhaps you have something up your sleeve. They require moving the converters from the stock location, so are not legal either.

Im a big fan of this cam Comp Cams XR275HR Cam (222/224 .566/.568 112LSA). I think the AFR heads I got are a big part ofthe power I mabe but a good cam none the less. It has a little lope at idle but not to much.

I live in cali, no cats but it got smogged just have to pay alittle extra. Def feel you with the issue of loudmouth and a cam, but it does sound perty at wot at 6500. I dd mine but def wish that I went with a 112 lsa.

Got an ace up the sleeve. I will be running that cam, pacesetter LTs, high flow or gutted cats and a true dual over-the-axle system. The only thing we need to start being carefull of here is the guys that camp out on freeway on ramps and measure the emmisions. Im not worried about polution but if they take a db reading...
