5.3 heads and custom 230/230 cam
I just recieved a set of 5.3 truck heads for doing some work on a friends car for payment. I was gonna put a set of PRC springs on the and have them ported and polished. I was wondering because I will be going with a custom 230/230 .612/.592 111+2 cam and was wondering if I would have to check piston to valve clearences since these arent 5.7 heads? I'm not gonna mill the heads at all I dont think, I figured they would help out a little bit with the cam. Any info would be appreciated.

the intake valve is smaller on stock 5.3 head 1.89'' i think and will kill any power you get from the bump in compresion but the gometry is the same as ls1 head just smaller chamber.
IMO you shood put a 2'' intake valve in if want to get your eforts worth out of your porting

Send them to TEA and have them do their stage 1.5 CNC port job on them and you will have a great set of heads...they will put in the larger valves (2.02) and you will have plenty of flow and they will work great with that cam...call them and ask to speak with Brian Tooley

Yes you better check the clearance with those heads, its gonna be closer than with the stock heads. We had to back that cam up on Chrs1313 motor because it had like .060 thou on the intake to valve.(too close). Retarded it 2 degree it had about .075 on the intake, which is still too close but I can live with it.

Definately will need a bigger valve like the guys are saying. We offer the cnc porting, valvejob, decking & reassembly for $600. If your going to install the 5.3l heads you really need to let someone experienced port them. The chambers, valve sizes & runners all need work before dropping on the ls1.
The PRC cnc work should work really well for you & we could do a stage 1.5 to keep the price down. Here's a link to some data on them:
