Default 87mm L92 throttle body... worth upgrading to the 90mm LS3 tb?

Running an LS3 intake and I'm wondering if there are any real gains to be had? 3mm doesn't seem like its worth the trouble to me but it cant hurt to ask if anyone has done it and if there were gains?

Some people say yes and other say no. Th LS3 has a slightly smoother air path compared the the L92. I think that the L92 is the same as the 87MM LSA Throttle body.

Unless your really using the total cpacity of the throttle body it should not make a difference.

I swapped the LSA out for an LS3 on my engine...just because I had it.

The air path is far from smooth on the 87mm inlet thats for certain. I was planning on porting all that off though so it would basically be smooth like an LS3 tb and cutting the shaft in half which will probably more than make up for the 3mm loss.

As Im building this thing Im posting along the way these little things Im finding and putting feelers out on the boards to get feedback exactly like you just posted Robin so thanks.

I always try the search first of course but I didnt come up with anything on this here or over at performance trucks.

I'm wondering the same thing for my LY6... 90mm ported vs 87mm? Or just try to port my own? How would I go about porting my throttlebody?

Porting is one of those things where you typically just want to remove airflow obstruction and when looking down the throat of the 87mm tb theres PLENTY of obstruction both in front of the butterfly and behind it. My thoughts at this point are to get the car up and running and then either port it or send it out. Theres a few guys who do this that i've found when searching around other sites and google, ebay etc. Its typically about a hundred bucks or so. I had my LS1 tb ported and it worked fine no issues at all with running or idle and I have no idea if it actually added any power as it was ported before I ever started the engine. ( Swap car )

From just about everything I've read theres little if anything to be gained from swapping to the 90mm. I didnt find any dyno back to back tests on it but I did find a lot of info about swapping to a 90mm over at performancetrucks and no one really claimed it was a noticeable power gain. Even with porting the 87mm most members claim better throttle response is the major plus rather than gaining any hp

I guess it makes sense really considering there's soooooooooooo little obstruction on ls1 tbs and porting them seemed to work. These 87mm versions are majorly obstructed so perhaps porting makes a bigger impact on them. Seems sensible and thanks for the review

who/where did you get it ported?

fasterproms. They didn't polish it so I'll have to do my own polishing, but even unpolished it made a HUGE difference in terms of the feel of the car.. I took a pic to compare the two side by side.... you can see how obstructed the thing is from the factory.

I also did the mod where you bend the IAT sensor inside the MAF up a bit so that it comes into direct contact with incoming air and isn't shrouded at all... dunno if that makes a difference, but I'll know come summer time

I'd like to see them thats for sure. Did they port the rear throat of the tb as well or just in front on the blade?

they ported back and front - it's a good deal bigger... they opened it up real good. pics:

in the "before" pic, you can see the massive amount of material obstructing airflow on the bottom of the throttle body.

Cool thanks for the pics. You aint kidding when you say "massive amount" your pics do not do justice to how freakin huge that bulging obstruction is on these things.

nah, none of the backside - it was just opened up a few mm that's all.

It's a tremendous amount of material, but it's a significantly more fun car to drive.... the throttle is SO much more responsive... it's like night and day, really. I'm not really sure as to power increases... though the car FEELS faster, I have no data to back that up.

Well seeing as most of the fun we have when driving is alone on the road where we want to feel the power then this mod sounds like high smiles per mile to me. Im definitely doing it thanks for the report and pics again man.
