Default Rubber on Knock Sensor Bolt

What's the purpose of the rubber on the Gen IV knock sensor bolt? See the pic.

I need to use a button head bolt on the driver's side to help it clear the oil line going to the cooler. I tried to roll it off of the bolt but it just breaks up.

Maybe a sealant for when it's installed no moisture gets into the threads, or something from packaging.

Since the knock sensor is a piezoelectric device and detects through vibration, I thought just maybe it was to prevent the sensor from picking up a false reading from the sensor tapping against the bolt. If that's the case I figured I could put a little string caulk or tape wrap on the bolt.

I am sure the design is meant to be rigid so that it induces the same vibrations that come from the engine, no dampening needed. I am sure most mechanics do not apply anything to the bolts that hold these.

So the question remains as to why GM went to the time and expense of applying the substance to the bolts that come with the sensor. Surely there must have been a reason.

Is it really bothering you that much?? Bolt them on and go. I got the same sensors and my bolts didn't come with that stuff on them.

Since his *did* come with the rubber on it, he asked a legitimate question. With the added information you provided, he now knows it will probably work.

I appreciate people who don’t just send it when faced with something they don’t understand. Details matter.

A "lock" to allow the assy line guys to grab a sensor and not have to pick up a bolt.

Just installed an LS9 dry sump pump on a build, and it came with the exact rubber “thingies” on the bolts. The rubber..IMO…just holds the bolts in place during shipping. Or as Old Buzzard suggested, it would make assembly line work faster also, because the bolts are already in place and won’t fall out.

Yup, why I said my second part about being something from packaging.
