Great question, do you know how to tune as well ?

(I wouldn't be surprised if he does LOL)

Yes, I am going to. This is the area that certainly interests me the most. I have done a few, one H/C LS1, one Vortec LS1, and my 3 Bar OLSD Procharged LS2. I am no expert and have fought some quirks in the tunes I have done, mainly idle stuff and some surging, but I am getting better and learning more. WOT is easy, part throttle driveability seems to be where I can get hung up a little.

I have my Bob Morreale Tuning guides, both the Beginner and the Advanced , haven't cracked into the Advance book yet, that is going to be my weekend reading. To date, it has all been off the Beginners book, HP tuners website, and some help from a friend teaching at a votech college that runs a late model Performance program where they cover some tuning info.

This engine has the biggest cam out of any of the three I have played with, so we will see what that entails.

Dyno time doesn't cost me anything, the college is free. When I got the Procharged 403 close I finished WOT at the track and had better luck than on the dynojet.

I don't anticipate this deal to be a dyno queen anyway. The car never has been with any of the set-ups. I am not planning to lock the 3800 RPM converter , it has 9" Ford, heavy driveline and an auto. It only dyno'd 685 rwhp before (unlocked) and ran 9.80's @ 3810#. If this deal goes in the 10's anywhere I'm happy. , even if it dynos 480 at the tire. I am just not that into racing dynos, but they do expedite the tuning time. If I had a 'dyno friendly' car I maybe would be more into it.

Regardless of what it makes or doesn't make I will post the dyno information and more importanly my ET slip, which I hope to get before the cool spring air diminishes.

Talk about DIY !!! Damn bro, you really do DO it all. To get better if you had the time you could take an HPTuners class and learn all the slick tricks that the best tuners know.

Thumbs up

I plan to do a build like this next winter once I pay off my car. Looking foward to seeing this one complete. I dont rush anything and go by the measure thrice theory, which seems to be your approach as well.

Got it all put back together today. Still lack about 2-3 hrs to get it to a start up point. Had to change some things around after going away from the Procharger set-up.

Need to add some fluids, work on a start up tune, and mount a few more things. Getting close, unfortunately probably won't light it off until next weekend with Easter tomorrow and a busy week at work coming up. So close, just ran out of steam tonight......

Here are some pics of the car put back together. Kind of excited to have my driver back with cold A/C, never could run it during the hot months with the compromised fan set-up the Procharger arrangement had.

Damn do you drive that thing? That has to be one of the cleanest undersides of a F-body I've ever seen!

Nice!

So far just down the dragstrip....it only has 5200 miles on it. This is engine #3. I don't drive it in the rain and when it gets dirty I wipe it down, its easy if you have a lift in your garage. If you haven't noticed I am **** with my stuff. I do plan to drive it more often now, moreso than just taking it over to the track. I picked it up 4 yrs ago from the original owner with 2800 miles and it was bone stock. I bought it to get acclimated to the LS world and see what they were all about. Now that I am, I am going to start enjoying and driving it. Although I have debated selling it, I get bored easy, especially when they're done.

Default Filled with Trepedation...

Hey Helicoil,

I just read this entire thread and now have some books I can put on Amazon:
  • How to Hotrod Small Block Chevrolets
  • Pro Engine Blueprinting
  • Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s
  • Chevy LS1/LS6 Performance
  • Automotive Engine Repair and Rebuilding
  • Small-Block Chevy Engine Buildups
  • John Lingenfelter on Modifying Small-Block Chevy Engines
Seriously, great job. And thanks for the clear explanations.

I have a couple (lots) of rookie questions. I've made lots of bolt-on mods, (intake, heads, rockers, etc.), but never built/rebuilt a complete engine. I would like to make the attempt, since I have an SBC in need. So as not to hijack any further, here's my thread. Your comments are appreciated.

This is the single best build thread I have ever read. It was a pleasure to read and learn on every single post.

I am in the process of wanting to build my own motor and this thread is fantastic motivation.

Own and read all those books, at least once! lol I'll check the thread and offer whatever I can. Too sleepy to do it tonight. Kids wore me out collecting Easter eggs all day.

Yes, the car is clean. That is what happens when you don't drive them that much. Not sure if that is good thing or bad thing. I do like building them though. I just wish the thrill would last longer.......

When I get my camera back, I'll post a picture of a very special egg I found.

Awesome thread. I did want to ask why you went with an aftermarket crank instead of stock? I have "read" stock cranks are good to 1000hp or so. I am asking because I want to learn.

I wish I would have paid more attention in math class now.
