Default ??? on LS3 Timing Cover and Cam Sensor

How does the cam sensor work on a LS3. I have a LS1 now, building a LS3.
I have the stock LS1 sprocket and gear with a LS2 timing chain now.
I guess what I'm asking is what gives the cam sensor a signal? What all do I need to change out to make a LS1 work on a LS3?
Thanks in advance guys.

Well, are you going to be keeping the engine 24x or leaving it 58x? That will be the first question.

If you want to run the LS1 pcm the LS3 crank has 58 tooth reluctor on the crank. The old LS1 was a 24 tooth. You will need a converter for the crank sensor. If you go with an after market crank you can order the amount of teeth that you need. On the cam sensor you will need to run a LS3 type of cam spocket it has the pick up point on it for the cam sensor. The sensor is on the timing chain cover. You will need a harness to connect this sensor to the exsisting wiring. The LS1 sensor was mounted in the top rear of the block behind the manifold. The new blocks don't have the mounting hole for the sensor and the cams don't have the pick up point on them. The knock sensors will have to be moved to the block or deleted. The new blocks don't have mounting points under the valley cover. I'm deleting them on my new build.

The cam sprocket gives the signal, so you'll need to replace the LS-1 sprocket with the LS-2 sprocket...

O.K. This is going to be a 416 stroker motor. I'm re using my Lunati 4.0 crank with the 24x ring and LS1 PCM.
When I install a new cam in the old motor (382) I bought a LS2 chain and
I think a LS2 cam sprocket. I left the gear on the crank. How can I tell if I have the LS2 cam sprocket? Can I leave the gear on the crank or does that have to be changed out also?

That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure.

You need the cam sprocket and sensor off of a 24x LS2, as the cam is 2x on the LS1 and some early LS2s. With the 58x reluctor, GM switched the cam to 4x.

The best bet would be to get parts for an 05-06 LS2 GTO or 05 Corvette, as they all had 24x LS2s with 2x cam sensors. I'm 100% positive, but I think you'll need a matching cam sensor also.

The 2x sprocket looks like this:

Is there a different cam sensor between an LS2 and an LS3 or between 4X and 2X?
