im just doin a little research for my next build in a year or so. right now im between these two motors:
402 aluminum
or
408 iron
i like the idea of having the lighter aluminum block, so is an extra 6 cubes really worth it? i dont plan to boost or spray the motor and im looking for the 550rwhp mark. so what are your guys thoughts? thankyou in advance

I built a LQ9 402 this last year.. The plan is to Squeeze it this next race season!! To offset the weight I replaced the K-member and lower A-Arms with UMI!!! I am extremely happy with the set-up!!! The LQ is about $500 bucks cheaper than the LS2, if you buy new. Make sure you define your goals before you start. This will help you keep costs within reason!! Good luck with the build and keep us posted.

if the only differences is 6 cubes and aluminum vs. iron, i'd definately sacrifice the cubes for an aluminum block in an all motor build. your going to spend more on lightweight parts to offset the iron blocks weight than your going to save by getting the cheaper motor. and the aluminum block's going to handle more than the power your looking to build anyway.

im better in cc, so once converted its:
6.587 L Alum
6.685 L Iron
75 pounds off is wayyy better than adding 0.1 Litre to your engines dicplacement (again, like others say, if your gonna be doing heavy boosting then you want iron).

There is the extra cost for the covers and whatever else is required for the LS2, if overall price is consideration.
I've become a big proponent of weight savings when I got in my GF's car after she had been running high tens all day and could not dip into the tens, lol. I'm about 100lbs heavier than she is.

honestly, if money was no issue, i would go lsx454 all the way! and im actually thinking about taking a little extra time to save for that motor instead. i would love to have that under the hood. anyone know a rough price diff between ls2 402 and lsx454?
