Default I think my new LS7 is hurt :-(

I recently finished rebuilding the engine in my Z06. The original motor dropped a valve, and destroyed everything. I spent a year saving and shopping, getting it back together.

I changed my oil today, at 1500 miles. This is what I got from my magnetic drain plugs

Most of it was just paste, but some of it cleaned up:

It's hard to tell in the picture, but all of the material is no bigger than 1/8 of an inch at the biggest, it's also all thinner than paper, and it does respond to a magnet. Also, all of the material is shiny, its not dark like it appears in the photo.

When draining the oil from the pan, I ran all of it through a painters strainer, and I go NO material in it. Also, the oil did not have a pearly appearance to it, as most oil does that has a lot of metal in it. I cut the filter open, spread out the pleates, and ran a magnet over every inch of it. There was some metal paste again, and a small amount of gritty metal, that felt similar to sand.

Anyone ever experience this? We are thinking its either from the cam plate, or the thrust bearing, and may not be a big deal. Right now, at idle car makes about 70 psi cold running 0w30 Amsoil. When hot (180+), it still makes 38-40 psi.

Ant input would be greatly appreciated.

You can hope some of it was left over in oil galleys from previous engine problems. It is speculation 'cause no knows the history of engine or the rebuild but you. This is why you cannot be too **** when building engines. I would watch it real close for a while and maybe not run it hard until it proves alright. I hope you disassembled the old oil pump and cleaned up all the related plumbing. Good luck.

The block was brand new out if the crate (I also had it hot tanked), the oil pump is new too. I also had the oil cooler flushed at a radiator shop, and flushed it myself with 10 cans of brake cleaner, compressed air, and a magnet.

I typically wouldn't wait 1500 miles to change oil after a rebuild. I do mine 20 minutes after initial startup and idle, 500 miles, 1500 miles and then switch to synthetic. I guess the best thing to do (actually second best, first would be to take it back apart and inspect) would be to put the plug back in it, fill it up with oil and drive it some. If it continues to make metal I would pull it. If not, and no apparent noise or oil pressure issues continue to drive it.

I drained the oil at 500 miles, and now at 1500. At 500 miles the drain plugs looked like chia pets, but there wasn't much of anything besides metal paste.

What kind of rings did you use? What kind of ring compressor did you use when you installed the pistons?

I used the ring pack that came with the Mahle pistons that I bought. I didn't use a ring compressor, it was a 4.125 loader. It made small work of piston installation.

Im not thinking its a bearing issue. Here is a vid of my oil pressure from this morning

I am thinking that the inner spring from my dual springs may be hitting my valve seals. I'll get into it this weekend and see.

If you still have the oil that you drained out, I recommend you send an oil sample to Blackstone Laboratories. Not a sponsor here but, hopefully the Mods will let this slide. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/index.php They'll send you a free sample kit. You'll just have to pay a reasonable fee for the analysis. You give them information on year, make, model of the car, engine etc. They can tell you what exactly is in the oil and where it is coming from. It's amazing. I use them for all of my vehicles. Good Luck!

I wish I could, the oil was set aside to do that, but it was accidentaly disposed of.

I ran the car for 200 more miles and the plugs look good. The car still makes great oil pressure, and the same rwhp.
