Help me choose a 550+whp motor setup!
Hey all! I am having a hard time choosing a specific route for my build. All I know that I want to run an ls1, ls2, or an ls3 and that I need around 550 whp or more. I have no parts right now other then the components to complete the swap, so I will need a complete engine in the end. My budget is $9000 and I want to keep the setup N/A for now, possible? I am well capable of building the motor myself but I am not opposed to purchasing a complete crate motor.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
This is race car build, will be running a minimum of 100 octane. I will be building an intake/header.

not sure talk to texas speed they are good with that. i was thinking about getting ls3 conversion but prob just stay with my ls1. the pros about ls3 you can buy a turn key for 7-8k with 525hp. then you have a wide range of things you can do. but im just wanting about 400 450 rwh for my car with a good lope so i decided to just stay with what i have.

600rwhp is pretty high N/A IMO. You would need to rev that LS3 pretty high with really nice heads/intake/exhaust combo.
I would go with bigger cube, like a 427-440. 9000$ seems short to me.
Go to the dyno section and show me a 600rwhp N/A build under 9000$. There is not many, if any.
450-525rwhp seems more realistic to me for a LS3 build, many variables come into play.

Thanks for the info. I thought 600 was do-able with that budget, I changed the power goal to 550 whp. Realistically I will be happy with over 500 wheel, I plan to go forced induction later but for now just trying to come within budget.

Budget; forged LS2, ported LS3 heads, LS3 intake; good for 450+rwhp
Budget 500rwhp; forged 408-402 with ported LS3 heads and LS3 intake with a good size cam. That should be a street monster
Advice; get the 40Xci stroker for the 500$ more. You will be glad you did it. I did 2 engine swap and I still regret I never got a 402-416ci...

Even with going 402-416 you don't have many of them going 550+ rwhp with an auto. You have a bunch pushing 520-530 rwhp.
In the stick world there are a bunch doing 550 though. So, if you have a stick it might be easier to attain that number.
Let me ask this though, why are you building an intake and headers? We need some details on what is this going in and intended usage.

Iron block 408, AFR 230's, 250/250 cam. $9K isnt much when starting from scratch. Iron block will save you from having to buy another block when you boost it. Or go with the LSX block if you have the cash.

His pockets are 9k,
With mods in my sig I put down 520 and 500tq thru a 9" and 4.11 gears on a mustang dyno in 100+degree day in the shop! On a brand new motor. I also ended up leaving hp on the table. Turns out I need more can, I am at the point that it would start pulling vaccum and I only can spin it to 6300!! And then it peaks. So you can achieve the 550 goal no problem.

You are all still on this street car kick. Yes, on pump gas and full street trim, 550 out of a good stroker is about max, but this is a race car on high octane fuel. Compression and timing can be significantly higher.
With that, I still see no problem hitting 600+ to the wheels. Maybe more with a good vacuum pump and possibly a water/meth setup...
