Default LS1 6.0 vs LS2 6.0

I just bought a 2006 Chevy VortecMax pickup with the 6.0 motor.I was wondering why a ls2 6.0 is 400hp and a ls1 6.0 is 345hp?

That is like asking what the difference between a stallion and a mare. They both weigh 1000 lbs, have 4 legs, and one head. In other words you need to know a little bit about engines for an answer to make sense to you.

Exactly. Same size, but different internals.

....the LS1 isn't a 6.0L, it's a 5.7L, there's a start...

And if you mean an Lq4 or Lq9 vs. the LS2, you're talking about completely different engines.

The VortecMax is the LQ9 iron-block 6.0L originally found in the 2002 Escalade. It uses LS6 heads with a Vortec intake manifold (unique to truck applications) w/ 10.0:1 compression and a truck-friendly cam profile that promotes early maximum torque and a flat torque curve (sorry, I don't have the specs).

The LS2, which debued in the C6 Corvette, is all alliminum and has 10.9:1 CR with the same basic LS6-style heads and a new composite intake manifold. Cam specs promote higher redline (6500 vs. 6000 on the VortecMax) and a "peakier" power delivery (although not as much as the "racy" LS6).

What about the internal parts? Is the crank and rods similar to the LQ4 or LQ9. Or, is is LS2 specific. What about the pistons?

Nothing is the same between the two engines. The LQ engine blocks are cast iron and the LS engines are aluminum. The cranks are slightly different. The rods and pistons in the trucks are beefier (i.e., they weigh more). The heads on the LQ engines are not LS6. They are LQ engine specific (similar to LS6 but the combustion chamber is 8cc larger). The cams, valve train, intake manifolds are all completely different.

Now, because these two engines come from the same family, parts do interchange. Just about everything that comes on a LS engine can be installed in a LQ engine, even the belt drives. There are two exceptions to this; the 7.0L LS7 and the 5.3L LS4. Both use parts that are specific to their application (like the shorter crank on the LS4).

By the way, the LS2 in the trailblazer has the truck intake too. I thought the primary hp difference was the compression (the so called ls6 style heads) and camshaft also.

By the way, is the exhaust system decent on the truck?
