what heads?? afr, trick flow, etp, patriot
o.k. i bought a used 402 rotating assembly. Currently at the machine shop getting freshened. The motor had trick flow heads on it and made awesome #s. I am fairly new to the lsx motor platform and just dont know everything that is out there. I had a set of afrs on a small block, and loved them. I have heard good things about the trick flows and the et heads. I have read many posts that say great things about patriots customer service. The patriots are very tempting for the price. If i go with a high dollar head i wont get the motor in the car by spring, but i only want to do this once. The guy i bought the motor from said he had patriots on it and the trick flows made 20-30 more hp throughout the powerband. I plan on spraying a 150-200 shot at the track only. I guess what i am looking for is a motor that makes n/a what i make on spray now. (500 rwhp or close) and then spray it so i will probably get kicked off the track til i cage it. Also dont want just peak numbers i want a good power curve. The cam i got with the motor is a comp 238/240 at .50 604/609 lift on a 112 lsa. I just got a ported fast, and a 90 tb (thanks to vengence, good job Ron). Any ideas will be appriciated.

Looks like the cam was speced to the TFS heads. You can pretty much duplicate his results if you replace like in kind. You should make 500 rwhp with that setup pretty comfortably..
If you do the TFS heads go with the 225's

IMO, the trickflow's, Et's or afr's would be a good choice, all have pretty much proven to be a performer. Personally I am running a set of 240cc ET's on my 402, and it runs like a champ. The 225's from either afr, trickflow or ET would all be a good choice, really comes down to availability, price, needed parts to get them to work and personal preferance. I would be willing to bet all 3 of those heads, if tested together on the same car would be within 10 hp of each other.
I would stay away from the patriot heads, every person I know that has tried those things have either had problems, wether it be with the actual heads, not making power, etc.etc.

The ETPs are taller. If you plan on keeping your ac the coil packs hit the lines on the pass. side of the motor.
I have had nothing but goodluck with afrs but if the cam is speced for trikflows why reinvent the wheel?

The TFS 215's are made for a 3.90" bore, the TFS 225's are made for the 4.00" bore, and the TFS 235's are made for a 4.125 bore. A customer with a 402 recently swapped the TFS 225's for the TFS 235's and made another 10 RWHP and 12 RHTQ, so you might consider those heads as well.

In short, Brad (Noyzee) is upset we didnt warranty an old casting that had cracked which he had extensively welded on (which ultimately ruined the heat treat in the critical head deck area) setting it up for failure years later. If you want all the drama check the link above.
This is one of those types of things that can needlessy and quickly derail a thread so lets try to keep this already touchy thread on topic.
My vote is for AFR 225's by the way....
Seriously, there are many independent strong 402/403 results with the AFR 225's. They consistantly make big power on 400 CID engines. The cross section and flow compliment that engine very well.
Thanks,
Tony

I'm running the TrickFlow 235's on a 4.187" bore and out of the box untouched they contributed to 624 RWHP on pump gas through closed exhaust and the drive belt running all accessories. Torque exceeds 500 ft/lbs at only 3,600 RPM.
I find that impressive. Guess which ones I'd vote for?

So far the trick flows have a slim lead over the afr's Both from what i know excellent cylider heads. I would like to hear some more feedback on the prc heads. The price of those is not to bad. I have no personal experience, or know anybody that has those heads.

We have dyno'd engines with several different " flavor of the day " cylinder heads from the discussions that our end users have read about and decided to use on this site and other sites like it. We have made some good power\torque numbers with many different combos. We like the TFS 215-225, the AFR but have no experience with the 235-245 heads. We are currently testing different combos on a SLP 402 that lost a piston and had to be gone thru. We also have a LSX block that we are doing a 440 with Lunati \ Diamond rotating assy. and arount 11.3 to 1 depending on the which head we use. There are AFR, GMPP, L92 and TFS heads that are available to try once we decide what we want the end result to be for the customer ( which changes day to day ) but I am inclined to believe the TFS 235's will be the flavor of the day.

thanks guys for all the info, very helpful. Would the trick flow 235s be to much, possibly loss of low end tq.?? I like a ton of grrrr out of the hole. Any thoughts on the cam that came with the shortblock?? is it a good streetable cam?? Once again this is my first dive into the lsx platform.
