Was told this is a monster cam by some, and its not by others...
I will admit, when it comes to selecting cams, I am a moron. I have no idea how to determine the best combo, or even what a "big" cam would actually be.
Here is my situation...
I bought this 97 LT1 SS back in October of 2008 from a dealership. BEFORE the dealership had it, the previous woner had started setting it up for a supercharger...He had TPiS 187cc Heads installed along with 1.6 SA RR's, TPiS Cam, MSD 6AL Ignition Control, 52mm TB, etc... I have NO IDEA what the original block had...
He sold it to a dealership in Colorado. They could not get it to pass emissions so they could sell it, so they took the TPiS Cam out and re-installed the stock one...then added 3 CATs to the mix. Sometime before I got it, the block that WAS in it spun a bearing...instead of rebuilding THAT block, they purchased a Jasper rebuild block bored .040 and put that in.
I bought the car, and they gave me the cam that USED to be in the car along with it.
Nothing else besides the block and cam was changed, so I re-installed that cam and removed the CATs. Now someone told me that this cam is HUGE and I need higher compression to run it...is this true???
The cam is the TPiS ZZ409 and the stats are:
Duration at .050: 226/226
Lobe Lift: .345/.345
LSA: 112
Seat Duration: 287/287
Gross Valve Lift: .520/.520
Do I actually need a High Compression setup for this? Is this "actually" a large cam or no?

Bumping the compression would of course help, but by no means is needed with and intake valve closing that early.
So what heads does it have on it now, stockers?
That cam is a single pattern cam and wouldn't be my choice for stock heads, but should still make decent power. Just make sure you have headers on it.
It should lope decent with that duration, do you know what the LSA is? That will determine the "popcorn popping" sound at idle that some like.

and why would you do that??? Plus its already IN the car right now........kindof extreme to rip it out just to sell it and get another if this one if fine. I'm not trying to build a high power car or anything...something in the low 13's, high 12's at 6000 ft. is fine with me...
Its more of a show car than anything else. I just wanted to make sure this cam was not going to be detrimental to the car...I dont want it to be a fucked up show car lol. If it needed to have high compression pistons and all THEN I would rip it out to put another in...but if not, I'm content

Didn't read the whole story lol. The way you set it up though (along with the title) seemed like you were asking if it was okay to install (if it was too big, etc). Didn't know it was installed. Sorry

It is kind of an odd ball but you should be telling us how it is!! It is in your car, what do you think of it? As for the specs it doesn't seem that out of the ordinary, your valve lift is actually .552 through 1.6 rockers so it is right on par with a lot of others lift wise. I am not sure what lobe design they are using but I know my voodoo has pretty aggressive lobes and the throttle response is awesome.

I have open headers right now with no backpressure whatsoever...I am having an issue in 1st gear with my accelleration from a dig...It bogs like it has no low torque. Does not misfire, and top end is great. I have been told backpressure because they claim LT's need backpressure, then I was told backpressure does not matter, then I was told fresh air hitting my O2's, then I was told that wouldnt cause THIS issue...I am still working it out though. It is NOt staying open, I am trying to get the exhaust back on but I have been re-scheduled 3 times now. As soon as they get me in I will have full borla 3" exhaust on it with no CATs. Then I can find out whether "backpressue" or "O2's" are ACTUALLY my problem, or if its something a little more serious.
