I just now realized that cutting that metal support was still required. I just don't feel good about that. As remarkably good as the OP's install and directions look, for now I will stick with my CAI.

Yep, thats first thing in the writeup. if i notice any increase in creaks or anything like that I am going to weld a piece of angle iron in the opposite way or something directly beneath/behind. i decided it was worth taking a chance after so many people posted gains of 1-2 tenths and 1-2 mph.

For a race car, no doubt its worth doing.

Agreed, but i dont exactly have a race car either. I just like proving to the LS1 guys that LT1s aren't as limited as everyone thinks. I am hoping for gains in gas mileage as well.

Believe me i am fussy about my car and wouldn't have done this with the sheetmetal method others have done. Unlike the process i described in my writeup, i didnt make any cuts on the car until i was sure it was going to work and look nice.

Also for what its worth, I believe that is 1/8" sheetmetal at best. My dremel went through it like butter, I was kind of disappointed with that. Even cutting the trap door for my fuel pump was much harder. Hopefully the layer beneath it is of thicker construction.

Yeah, I'm fussy about fit/function myself. I had already figured on welding som metal back in if I ever do the mod. I have a salvage parts guy diggin aroung now for the upper support. We'll see what happens.

I got a Ls1 lid, ls1 coupler, and radiator support to fit without any cutting on the core support. I used a Glastek cowl hood though and had to trim a little of the underside but otherwise it was a direct bolt in.

Forgive the dusty engine bay...

yep, whole different playing field with a cowl hood. I would stick with the CAI before i switched to a cowl hood though, i love my SS hood too much.

just put some grease on the lid and close it to mark where you need to trim.

Not much really, here is a picture I took after I did the rough cut, I took a dremel and cleaned up the edges a little. This is a BOLT ON hood, a pin on hood probably would not need any trimming.

I have the Sunoco hood (not the tall one).. You think I could get away with it with a bit of trimming?

It may as long as the cowl starts at the front of the hood, you should be ok. Just see if the lid follows and fits in the shape of the cowl. If so, just see where you need to trim

It looks like the slope of the cowl is the same in the front where the lid would be, mine is a 4 inch but I dont believe its 4 inches at the front.

That Glasstek cowl really has some rise. I'll se about trimming mine. Afterall, the hood has no structural influence on the fron end.

I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures of your hood progress. I did this once without the radiator support and just the lid and filter. I got everything to close fine, without trimming anything, but the radiator rested on the E-WP. I put some rubber there for damage control. I might have to pick up a LS1 support and do it this way. 1-2mph for the lid conversion, then possibly 1-2 more with an "induction persuader" sounds pretty tempting.

Great tread and information. Way to keep these LT1's breathing.

Is anyone putting on a FTRA or SSRA with their lid?
