Default What's all the fuss about LS1's? Is the LT1 that bad?

Ok here is the deal, I keep hearing about all these ls1's that are just so great that who knows why other cars with other motors exist! I have a 94 mustang with a 331 stock compression with AFR185's, custom cam and all supporting mods. I have never had a problem beating LSx cars on the top end and I have a full streetcar with a very small cam, now I buy this LT1 camaro and all of a sudden I jump on the forums and it seems like the hot topic is throw away the lt1 and swap in a lsx. Well that's not and option, I will build what I have because I like the way the engine looks what I'm trying to say is that 500 hp is 500 hp no matter what car it's in right? So wouldn't a 500 hp car beat a 450 hp car? If I do a stroker with heads and cam on the lt1, is it going to be a strong runner?

They are good engines, optispark keeps me away from them.

The LT1 has been pushed to well over 1000 hp. This doesn't happen very often though because of the ridiculous costs. On a more realistic level, a well built 383 or 396 with good parts and a good tune should make around 450-470 through a stick. With a solid roller some have made over 500 to the wheels. The LT1 is essentially a fuel injected sbc with reverse cooling. It is not a bad engine, just the LSX series has overshadowed it. I am swapping to an LSX merely because of the capacity for many more cubes, better response to mods, and so many more parts to choose from. Yet there is a strong LT1 crowd on this site, so you should have all the info you need to build a stout performer. Good luck!

1 Thing I like about LT1s is when you beat a LS car they act all suprised. saturday I raced a 04 GTO with 360 to the wheels and I put 1/2 a car on him. He was speachless

I think people like them better cause they are more dependable and you don't have to get the heads ported to make big power.

Dependable? as in no opti? also once I recieve my LE2 package the playing will be level right? I also sold the powerdyne as im in the process of ordering a procharger to compliment the LE2 H/C, with those mods the LSx is going to need more than a lid, exhaust, and tune right?

I sure did im all about building what is not very popular, that is why I chose a 94-95 mustang, I wasnt about to jump on the modular bandwagon (although the terminators are pretty sweet) and I just could not pass up on my extremely MINT 94 z28 and come to find out this is the F-body version of my 94-95

I perfer a V6....these ls1's and lt1's can kiss my ***! Seriously though I have seen some fast lt1's. Look at Larry from Speedinc his car is moving and guess what....its an lt1! Do some research and find a good lt1 tuner and your good to go.

I just dont understand, i was searching all morning and all I read was about this mythical LSx top end, it's almost like the general blows on them while there are racing, after the H/C/I stoker on the stang it too charged like a **** on the top end and to this day the only LSx I have lost to on the highway is this certain zo6 vette that pulls like 2 cars on me but it sounds modded too. There was a kid with a loud SS LS1 that had a dumb look on his face when I pulled at least 2 cars on him and he never reeled me in.

Its all about building smart, any car can be fast. LS1s are just easier to do so. Id be willing to bet a Lt1 runs 7s this spring.

I think it's all relative up to a certain hp range. With a good motor, H/C and either FI or N2O both motors are going to be in the 500-650 hp range. If you are going for over 1k hp I think the Ls1 will be a much better platform but seriously not everyone one here has those hp goals or will ever meet them anyway.
For me I've had many of both and I just prefer the look of the lt1 TA.
