Hey guys so we ended up tearing my rebuilt motor apart the other day. The engine had was only rebuilt 137 miles ago and its really messed up. So we took it apart and found that the oil pump drive gear had stripped. I know it was in place and the unit was brand new. So that was the start of the bad news. Took the pistons out to find number cylinder 3 and 8 had spun bearings. On top of that the rest of the pistons were not that far behind. We also took the oil pump out and its got a hard spot in the gear. It was a bran new Melling oil pump. It was not a high volume. So what could cause the oil pump drive gear to strip like this. Ill get a picture up tomorrow along with all the bearings.

I had 1800 miles on my new engine and stripped the oil pump drive gear on mine too...same thing when I pulled the melling oil pump out it had a hard spot too when you tried to spin it.
Replace it with a standard volume/pressure Melling Select oil pump ($80)
Brand new oil pump drive gear
had to put all new bearings too..
Knock on wood so far so good.....
I don't know what exactly caused mine to happen however when i pulled the oil pump apart to inspect it there was a little chunk missing off the gear so I don't know...

mine did the same thing and i have taken apart three different lt1s since then and have found that they all have worn on the very bottom of the gear and all but one had the top piece where it bolts was cracked almost the the pump drive was walking away from the cam gear. i used thicker oil for awhile and it worked but then i spun a bearing.

You guy should check out "Shon Herron Performance" and get one of his billet aluminum oil pump drive housings and a composite drive gear. That's what I did after see and hearing about all of the failures like this.
