Default Name this noise!

A friend of mine called me up with this problem the other day on his 96 LT1. Only mod is a cutout. Said he was getting on the highway at about 3/4 throttle, when suddenly the oil pressure dropped to zero, and the check gauges light came on. He immediately shut it down and had it towed home. It still shows no oil pressure, but it does not sound like bottom end to me, sounds more like valvetrain. A shop he took it to said "we looked at the oil pump, and it is completely clogged." Which can't be done without pulling the oil pan, and they did not.

So has anybody ever seen or heard a motor sound like this?

I definately hear no oil at the rockers. Are you hearing the rod knock through the whole video, or does it become more apparent at a certain point?

I bet the oil pump driveshaft either broke or the gear is stripped.

It does have a weird echo. I did not personally check the oil level, he told me he checked it the other day when it happened.

DING DING! my car stripped the gear. but of course i didnt realize that until i had pulled the pan, and oil pump. but it will be one of the three.

oil pump
driveshaft
gear

either way.....why the hell are you running the engine. it takes oil to lubricate an engine. if you have no oil pressure then of course there is going to be engine noise. your just doing damage. Time to pull the pan.

Do you think he could get away with replacing the oil pump and pump shaft? Or are you thinking full rebuild? Assuming something in the oil pump has gone bad.

couldn't the pick up tube have fallen out? thats pretty common on stock lt1s if im not mistaken. Should take a rubber hammer to the oil pan and see if you can hear it bounce around.

Depends how long you have ran the engine without oil pressure. You may have already done damage. I caught mine quickly so my engine was saved. you can fix whatever is needed and just pray nothing is messed up.

That is also a common problem. you will obviously have to drain the oil for this to work.

Simple question, how long has the engine ran total without oil pressure? just your 17 second video seems like long enough to start eating your bearings.

Oh, and i approve of your "username" lol

Thanks for starting the thread ryan,

I'm the owner of the car:/ and for the questions as to why we had it running.. I figured at that point if something was messed up in the seconds i had it running on the hwy then turning it on for 30 seconds to give yall a chance at helping us diagnose it wouldnt kill me.

Also, I checked the oil, oil is clean as a whistle and full.

Total time of running since incedent would be less than 2 or 3 minutes total run time. I pulled over and turned if off within 30 seconds of gettin on the hwy when it happend.

Thanks for all the input, keep it comming.

the only hope I have is that the mechanic claims that the engine has a few psi of oil going through it still, and if thats true maybeee theres a chance.

I figured a rebuild would be needed, but we will see. Appreciate it, I used to have a 69 GTO, my dad has a 67 that he has had since 74. I grew up around Pontiacs. Another GTO will be in my future.

If it is indeed only the oil pump shaft I would get a new one, put new oil in it and start it up. If it doesn't make any excessive noise then run it until it dies.
As far as rebuild kits go, let a machine shop use what they recommend. Reason being is if you use something the shop doesn't like or endorse and there is a failure they can always blame it on your parts and you are SOL for any sort of warranty work.
