Agreed. I am equipped and able for general upkeep type jobs. I do not deem a LT1 rebuild a general upkeep type task. Oh well, live n learn. In the end I made $40 and i only worked on it for about 2 hours with the new water pump.

The freeze plug popped so the block was prob cracked, not a head gasket. The clank was prob a snapped rod or push rod. Should have kept it put the 500 motor in it and sold it for 3K. Its pretty easy job if not scared to try it and have an engine hoist.

My red car project had a badly overheated and hydrolocked engine. Didn't even spend the money to have it magnafluxed. Just kept the heads. Gave it away after I freshened up a used longblock (42k 4-bolt, under $1,000.00).

At first it sounded like a perfect candidate. After you started listing the flaws, it didn't sound so good... didn't sound any better than my 127k Formula hardtop. Glad you got a way out of it. Since you're not that good with wrenching yet, you might look for one that's mechanically squared away but needs some appearance work and then learn to wrench as you go with little things first. Best of luck.
