Default ram air hood question

I have a ram air hood and i'm about to make it functional by cutting out the nostrils in the front but if I don't have an air box will that be bad for the car or will it just help cool the engine?

Is it an SS hood or an SLP Ultra Z style hood?

Cutting holes in the hood would just let water spew all over the front of the engine when it rains. Granted water goes up there when the ground is wet anyways but not buckets full. Don't bother cutting holes if the airbox isn't there, it won't do anything. If you want the engine to be cool buy a 160* thermostat or have the fans programmed to come on sooner.

hmm thats a new hood to me. if its not functional i wouldnt make it functional. just get a cold air intake and that will be just as good as the factory WS6 and SS hoods that were functional.

I was researching this a while back and from what i gathered...the area on the hood where the scoops are is a "dead spot" so it doesnt get alot of airflow. I was thinking about getting a ls1 lower airbox/lid and using something like a FTRA to bring in air from under the car. I've read that a couple people have done it and have had some noticable gains. I'm still thinking about doing it myself. Do a search on "ls1 airbox" and you should find something useful. But if you don't want to go that route, a cai should be just as beneficial.

Leave the hood alone and it will cool the motor off some with it not attached to the air box. The air will flow directly on top of your intake cooling it down somewhat. Get the 160 thermostat as suggested above too if you want the motor to run at a cooler temp.

thats not true. while these hoods from the factory arent truly ramair, they get plenty of air. ride in an SS or WS6 car and youll notice that it pulls much better on the top end than a normal LT1. it needs air to do this. with that said a CAI is still just as good, but thats right it doesnt look as good. to me its actually weird to lift the hood and not see the air box sitting there.

This Is True But Wouldnt You Rather Pay 200 Bucks For A Cold Air Instead Of 400 For The Ram Air Set Up. And The Cold Air Will Work Better Anyways. If Your Not Above 70-80 Mph, Then The Ram Air Doesnt Really Work All That Well.

ram air set ups are about 250 so that's about the same as CAI. Also, I'm not modding this car to hell and the main reason I bought this hood is for the visual appearance so I want to open up the nostrils and make it functional.
Can I do cold air and ram air? Please don't flame me if I can't do that...just wondering.

I Dont Know If You Can Do A Cold Air Ram Air Set Up. It May Be Able To Be Done. All Ram Air Set Ups I Have Seen Are Around 300-400 For The Airbox And All. I Got My Moroso Cold Air Off A Friend For 75 Bucks. You Can Find Them Cheap.

Oh i forgot to add text lol. Mine is cut out right now with no water baffles. I drove it in the rain once and no problems but i would not reccomend doing it without the air box. I am putting an SLP air box on mine. A ram air hood will get more than a cold are intake i am pretty sure. At 80mph, my hood flaps up and down violently. Not the front of the hood, the back of it. I even have the weather stripping removed. It forces alot of air in, atleast with my style hood it does. I would definately go with the ram-air box over cold air intake since you already have the hood. It will set your MAF closer to the TB which means better throttle response, and it will push a little more in at high speeds.

Whats nice about ram air is it completely seals the filter off from all of the engine bay. It comes with seals so only air from outside of the engine is drawn in. I cant imagine the air under the car being more than a few degrees colder than the air above the car. I'd still say get an air box (if that style hood can even have one) and go ram air rather than cold air.

Whered you got the hood i've seen similar ones on ebay and you can make it functional if you have the ram air airbox off of a 96/97 SS camaro that looks like the one that i am going to buy and i am going to make a kit using my CCAI and a ram air box together
If you have any questions let me know...

I got the hood from boa-fx...the only reason i did wasbecause it was 200 bucks cheaper than other hoods but it didn't fit properly so I need to get hood clips just to make the hood fit properly. I was looking at buying an air box for a SS 96-97 opposed to a SLP ram air airbox. tell me how ur set-up works once you get it installed.
