Default Your opinion on Trans. TH350 vs. TH400

Let me first say I have searched the forums and see that many recommend a TH400 for trans that will handle power and live. I have also seen that many say the TH400 will rob a lot of power. Not many mention the use of a TH350 and I wonder if that is because it would be considered going backwards from a 4L60E.

I'm putting a 383 in my 73 firebird. NOT my daily driver and not worried about having over drive. Just want a strong fast automatic.

My main question is does anyone think that a 383 LT1 making about 400rwhp will be too much for a built TH350 with a manual valve body.

What would be a recommended trans for a mostly street driven fun car that will every now and then see the drag. Again am not worried about overdrive. Just a fast auto that won't need rebuilding every 6 months. Thanks

i will say in all my time with cars,i have NEVER broken a th350.........
cheap torque converters on the other hand....
a 350 would most likely be MORE than fine for a long time, spend your money where it counts.

T350 will be perfect for your combo and budget. We use a T400 that is lighter and less rotating than any T350, but they are also $6000!!!

I am running a TH350 in my car and love it. I have been 9.80's and it's still running strong. Goodluck. Clint

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like the TH350 will be okay. Any feedback on where you guys got your trans, rebuilt at. Was it with TCI or one of the many other vendors or did you just go with a local trans shop. Thanks again.

We have a couple buddies down here that ran TH350s and they all held in to the deep 9s, in 3200+lb cars. They just suck *** driving around on the high way when you have a lot of gear. But I still plan on running one.

dont want to steal the thread but i was wondering about the TH350 in particular.

how well do stock th350's handle power? either my friend has really bad luck with tranny's or the one's he gets are crappy. he has an LT1 383 stock afr 195s, xfi 242/248 112 and a 150 shot and no (4)4L60E, (2)700r4, and (1) stock with shift kit/ 3500 stall th350 has held up on the bottle. he's had "race" built trannies and none last more than 3 months. the th350 he just blewup was stock and my friend said it by far is the best trans he's had for the formula.
