V6 & Z28 rear ends. R they the same?
It might be a stupid question, but what's the difference between a V6 3.4 rearend out of a 95 Camaro and a regular Z28 rear end. A friend asked if he can install one on his Z28. Thank you guys.

No and yes. All the rears, 93-02 are essentially the same. The differences are, from my research. Most V6's are one wheel wonder, most, not all. Some are 2.73s, some are 3.42s. If it's 2.73, no matter the rear, and you have higher, then you need to use your whole carrier, you can't just swap your gears in. The reverse is the same, if you for some reason want to keep the 2.73s. The discs are bigger by .3 inches on the 98+, and the 99+ have better posi.
And this is all F Body rears. So Z28 isn't special as apposed to a Trans Am. I'm in the same boat, and I plan to get a 99+ for my 93. Just make sure, if you have ASR (traction contral) the new one does.

Ok, well there's a 95 RS sitting at the salvage yard close by, what would you do to see if it'll work on a 96 Z28 ?? I simply want to take it out of the 95 V6 and put it on the 96 Z28. I understood from you that it MUST be a 3.42 in order to avoid any carrier swap and anything else, am I right?

No, the 3.42 will work with 3.32s. The lower ratios I think are called a 2 series carrier. Which won't work in the other ones. Which I don't know if they are called single series or not.
I'm just talking about the carrier and gears though. If it's a 3.42 and you have a 2.73, it'll still work, you'll jsut get a ratio upgrade. Most manuals come with higher ratio, so it could have 3.42s or not or 3.23s. The junk yard will know what it comes with. They log all that stuff. If no, then I'd be leery to buy from them anyways. I want to know info about what I'm buying, and if they're clueless, then I'll go somewhere else that knows what they have in their lot. I think it's car-parts.com that is a junkyard search site.
Back in the day, the RS was a v8, but a 305, so not exactly a high end car like the Z28. So I wouldn't be surprised if the 93+ RS was V6.
I'm not sure if you have a V8 car or not, and are wondering if a V8 rear will work in a V6 car, or vice versa. If you have a V6 car, don't worry. If you have a v8 car, then make sure it's posi or not.

Or I believe there is a stamped number you can run through GM. But you should change the fluid on a junkyard rear anyways. Who knows how much water is in it from sitting (internal condensation). If you do, don't forget to add Posi additive.
