I run 0w40 or 5w40 M1. I've heard that the M1 5w30 is kind of thin compared to some other kinds.

Yolu are getting and will continue to get baseless information. A FEW of us have actually done meaningful research on the subject as opposed to listening to marketing like most of those who have responded sofar apparently do.

If you REALLY care you will spend the 30 seconds to search it and find one of the many threads already started and in there you will find again a FEW of us posting meaningful information.
infinetebird appears to have done more research than most of the others combined.

Mobil 1 is on the thinner side of synthetic's.

I use Royal Purple, AMS Oil (2-stroke oil for sled, fourwheeler), and Mobil 1 for my car and I have never had an issue with either.
I have had real good luck with Mobil 1, put 40K+ miles on my LT1, from 78K-126K, where it is now, over a period of 5 years (only drove in summer) and my motor runs as strong as the day I got it.

I run Mobil 1 10W-30 in my LT1.

I also run Royal Purple (Not in my Camaro, in my Mustang) and it's never given me issues. In the Camaro I run V Racing oil.

Also, a GREAT oil discussion in Offroad Adventures, a marketing mag for 4WDHArdware.com.
Part 1: http://www.oramagazine.com/pastIssue...4wheel_finesse
Part 2: http://www.oramagazine.com/pastIssue...4wheel_finesse

Short version: really good base stock requires less additives and breaks down more slowly than cheaper base stocks, but ALL API graded oils are pretty darn good when first poured. Cheaper oils tend to have more additives to get them to lubricate well; these additive packages break down more rapidly than the base does. As a result, over time a 'great' base stock with few additives does better at protecting your engine, but if changed frequently enough, even relatively inexpensive oils do a good job... until they start to break down.

Big hint: 'Synthetic" no longer means quite what it did 5 years ago, it is now a legally defined term which can mean a very highly refined conventional base stock.

I recently switched to Royal Purple 10w30 from Mobil 1, in which I 've been using since the car was new. To me, I think they're all the same. As long as you change them frequently.
