Default synth ATF okay in 02 T56?

ok so i just spent about an hour reading various threads about dino vs syncromesh vs synthetic.

i caught in one of the thread that the major problems with the synthetics can happen in earlier t56s. mine is a 2002 t56, all stock.

should i be okay to run mobil 1, or should i stick with the syncromesh?

thanks all. sorry to beat a dead horse, just want to know if there is any difference in the trannies(based on model year) that might effect whether or not synthetic is okay to use

As long as it is Dexron III compatible, then it should be fine. I've run all sorts of fluids before and after my rebuild and what it really comes down to the majority of the time is the hydraulics messing up which in turns breaks the transmission. Various climates though will show which fluids will perform better, or provide slightly smoother shifting despite they all in the end are still giving the same level of protection.

thanks, it's just after reading so much info about royal purple, and everyone saying stick with dino ATF. i was unsure.

generally i like the lower friction rate of synthetics, but would syncromesh give a little more protection in a higher heat application, the car sees a lot of road course action.

thanks

Alot of people run synthetic or syncromesh. I don't recommend either by my past experiences. We run cheap Dextron 3 in all our builds.Only exception is road race cars.

i know what GM says, but GM doesn't always know best, and/or doesn't consider every application, just what the average guy on the street is going to do with the car. maybe i should have left the tranny fluid question out of it altogether, i know it sparks a debate. i am concerned with what fluid is going to hold up best for 30-90 minutes on a road course, running high RPMs, and generally abusing the tranny. i am not what is going to work best around town, or for a few passes down the strip, which is likely what GM based their recommend on. once i get the info on the blocker rings, i can come to my own conclusion on the fluid. so i apologize for mixing the two.

really the only thing i am wondering is whether or not there is a difference between 01 and newer t56s, and older ones. particularly concerning the blocker rings. was the material changed? if so from what to what? i've read that there was a difference. is there any validity to this?

thanks for all the replies so far.

I dumped the fluid in my 2002 z28 after like 10k and put in synthetic ATF and it didnt shift very smooth. I asked for a techincal explination on here but forgot its the internet so I didnt get an answer. Basicaly I think the syncros dont meash as well with the synthetic fluid. I dumped it a few weeks later and put conventional ATF in it and it has been fine ever since. Thats just my personal experiance.

Synthetic fluid without a friction modifier is just too slick . Syncros are brakes for your gears . If there is very little friction when you apply the syncro during the shift , they do not work very well . If you add a friction modifier to the fluid like what the Syncromax from Royal Purple has in it , the fluid works great .

I used all other's and always seem to have issues with noise etc. I went to Royal Purple Synchromesh --- not a problem since !

Yes, the friction material was changed in 2000-2001 Fbodies from "paper" fiber to a carbon fiber. The CF wears better, and less prone to damage by any moisture that might find it's way into the ATF. All rebuild kits since around that time have CF blockers as well..

Funny, I replaced the original fill with Mobil 1 ATF and it feels notchier all the time - but especially when cold. I think I'm going to drain it and go back to regular Dex III.

Amsoil...noticeably smoother, and have yet to read a bad review of amsoil fluids
