Unhappy Trans stuck in 4th gear!

Im about to go to my girlfriends house to look at her 99 T/A. She says she went to get gas this morning and it stuck in 4th gear and wont come out. Is there anything common I should look for?TIA

most likely a syncro key has been knocked out and it wot let you get out of gear. you can do a search for a more in depth explination but its only fix will probly be a rebuild.

definately sounds like something internally wrong with the tranny.

Another vote for synchro keys. I had the same prob Just limped it home driving in 4th gear, and sent it off for rebuild. If your lucky, you CAN get it out of gear if you just keep at it.. But, after its out, chances are your 4th gear will be either be not usable, or very difficult to get into.. and you won't want to risk getting stuck again. I had to limp mine around a few weeks til I could save money to send it off with no 4th gear. Barely used it anyways. Mine was caused by a dragging clutch, might want to check to see how your reservoir looks. Either way, its toast.

Good Luck,

i dont recommend doing this but my friends 2002 WS6 got stuck in 4th too.....we all told him not to do it but he stood on the driveshaft bulge in the backseat and kicked the shifter full force out of gear....tranny worked fine afterwards....once again im not recommending this but it worked in his case without messing anything up apparantly...

I had to do the same thing with my car. I was quite a ways from home and sure as hell didn't feel like calling a tow truck. One swift kick and it was back in neutral. lol Unfortunately, it want to go into 4th after that.

lucky for me when mine went i was close to home and all highway driving except for the last few miles so drove it that way. but starts from a dead start took its toll on the stock clutch. Its no fun to start out in 4th from a stop light.

I started taking the trans apart last night and I found the problem. The unit was rebuilt year before last by the dealer she bought the car from. When the so called tech put the unit back together he was supposed to replace a $.50 cent snap ring that holds the 3rd/4th fork on the rail.He didnt. When I got the housing off the ring was just hanging on the rail.Ill get it back together tonight and see how it works.

Umm, there is no snap ring on the 3-4 fork. There's a ring on the 5-6 fork (big snap ring), and a ring on the reverse fork (little snap ring), but 1-2 and 3-4 forks don't have snap rings.

I stand corrected on which fork it was. But it was the big snap ring that was just hanging there.

That shouldn't impact 4th gear though. It sounds like you have other issues. Did you open the main case? 4th gear is at the very front of the tranny (the gear itself is the input shaft). I'm still betting you popped a slider key.

From what i hear, cant this be caused by an improper installation of an aftermarket shifter? Mainly the usage(or lack of) the shift stops. Ive heard that if you dont have that shift stop adjusted right, that over time the 3-4 shift will really take its toll on the tranny from the overshift.

I might be wrong tho, anyone know for sure?

I've had the same problem but before that it would grind going into 4th unless I double clutch ..I believe I have also heard its a bent shift fork???? something about the 3-4 shift fork is aluminum and the others are steel and can get bent when shifting hard like when racing? how much are we talking to have the synchro key fixed and a steel shift fork put in? parts are cheap but I'm sure the labor hours are gonna be sickly high..any idea on cost?

I fixed it! I replaced the clips that I found hanging off of the 5th/6th fork and it works sweet now. I guess I dodged an expensive bullit.
