Question How To Start M6 w/out Pushing Clutch In

As many of you know, im trying to find a vibration in my car (any gear, or neutral, 1800 to 2500 RPMS) Clutch works fine other than my slave and TO are barking at me after each shift (when i let up on the clutch pedal)

Im planning on dropping my tranny to change out my slave and TO, and while im in there, am planning on removing my Spec 3 clutch and flywheel to inspect. While they are out and the car is still up in the air, i would like to start the car, and rev to the 1800-2500 range to see if my vibration is gone due to the FW being out,, how the hell do i do that? I talked to the J man at Spec, and he said that i would need to manually trigger the saftey switch to do it, but im just not clear on what he meant,, i found a pic to look at my own car to find, but after that, i dont know what to do..

here is the pic i found of what i beleive is the M6 saftey neutral switch... https://ls1tech.com/forums/attachmen...7&d=1197512069

Any help would be appreciated!!

No, that picture is of the cruise control switch which sits ABOVE the pedal (engages when the pedal is released). The switch you are looking for is a black, rectangular button that gets pressed in when the pedal is pushed down to the floor.

If you put your head under the dash, look directly behind the clutch pedal to where it would hit the firewall when pushed in. You will see a black rectangular button that you can press in easily with a finger. You need to press that button in and hold it when starting the car. Once the car is started, you can release it.

It looks like this:

Yup. I was testing out some stuff with an adjustable master for a while at one point and I had it adjusted so that it wouldn't click that switch even if I had the pedal fully depressed, so I would just reach down and push that switch in, turn the key to start it, then release the switch. Of course I had to worry about accidentally knocking the shifter into gear with my shoulder but sounds like you don't have a transmission to worry about.

LOL, my switch is broken & has been since I bought mine, so I've never needed the clutch when starting it.

But yea, you just need to trigger the switch since yours still works.

Yeah, i think i read a post of yours where you stated that your passengers (wife maybe) could start the car from the passenger seat.

How are you going to start the car with the flywheel out?

Just unhook your slave cylinder rod and push the clutch down, its one clip. Or get under there and push on the lower switch to activate.

ok i have heard this a few times. and just wna tot ask on here.

is it bad on the pilot bearing to start the car with the clutch plused in? like it would be better on it if you started it in netrual with the pedal not pushed in?

I've never heard of anyone doing this. I would think that it would vibrate more. You have thee mounting points for your drivetrain. Two Engine mounts, and one Transmission mount. If your Transmission is out, you would only have the two front mounting points.

I see the logic behind it, just never heard of this method. Be careful if you have it on Jackstands. Maybe you can lower it onto 4 ramps during the startup.

Ya I'm suprised the guy there at SPEC didn't catch that part and tell you that you wouldn't be able to start it..

I was under the impression that he would be pulling the clutch alone. Especially since it will be real hard to start the car without the flywheel, and thus ring-gear in place. A simple misunderstanding I suppose. This method of checking outage isn't one I see done regularly as most folks would simply take the parts to a machine shop and have them check the unit...or heck send the parts back to me and I will check them for you.

I had a vibration at about those RPMs. Sounded like a slight rattle. Yeah that was the remaining pieces of a destroyed pilot bearing eating away at my input shaft. While I was removing the trans I thought that all this black suit falling on my face was 130k mile clutch... nope. Clutch looked fine. Pilot bearing, on the other hand, sent the needle bearings packing and gnawed on the input shaft like a beaver to a log. $1280 later I have a rebuilt trans

Doh!!!!!!

Guess i will just pull it (FW) and getr balanced and such to see if it was out of whack and reinstall,,, Then i could start er up to see if that made any diff,, before buttoning up the tranny back up there, right?

Man im almost hoping i do see something, maybe not a chewed up Pilot Bearing, but i hope to find and fix,, this issue has made the car very unfun to drive.

Thanx all

Wayne
