Default T56 vs TKO600, 7k shifts, 2700 lb car

Just looking for opinions.... not a huge difference in price so might as well do it right the first time. Going in a 92 mustang coupe, lq4, l92s, vic jr 7k shifts

Either one will have a hard time shifting at those rpms without being face plated.

gah... thats why Im limiting it to 7k and not 7500 like Id like. Even at 7k its going to be a pain to engage?

A T56 with triple cone synchros will shift out beyond 7K.

Rockland agrees:

A good clutch can make/break your RPM capabilities also.

Faceplate that bitch....then you only need the clutch to take off.

Faceplating does not make the transmission clutchless...

Mine holds up pretty good not using the clutch....so yes it does. They don't recommend it, but if you do it right it's smother than using the clutch.

I always use the clutch at part throttle....never at full throttle. Breathe the throttle a bit to unload the tranny and pull the gear.

I don't see the 3rd gear outter ring on the triple/double setup lasting very long at high rpms. I'd say atleast 50% of the unit I rebuild have a cracked outter ring.

If this is a drag race application, you will not out perform a face plated shift design. It will shift 7K with ease and will only take a slight side step of the clutch to make the shift. If you use a kill box in conjuction with a face plated trans, you can literally hold the throttle to the floor and row gears like a pro!

lol dam budget keeps gettin ruined... how bad is a faceplated tranny on the street? Just have to bang the gear regardless of rpm correct? as in shift hard and quick no matter what

It dd's fine. You don't have to "bang" the gear, just shift it like you mean it. No limp dickin between shifts.

Who makes a kill box, MSD?

No one mentioned if either trans will survive at 2700lbs?

if a t56 survives in a vette and f bodies I dont think my 2700 lb car will have a problem... unless youre talkin due to the rpms

A GTO T-56 (2.97 first) isn't really an option for faceplating because of the triple double design leaves no room. Tremec did make a trans with this ratio not for production cars but has the 10 spline input in a double/single that can be faceplated. The standard 2.66 ratio f-body T-56 will faceplate no prob.

I regularly shifted my T56 at 7200rpm in a 3900lb GTO... but I broke 3rd gear 4 times too. I seriously considered face-plating before I sold that car.
