Need help making decision to buy "Core" or buy "Useable" T56 for my swap
Yes those are in quotations for a reason since it seems like some definitions of each can vary greatly
So ive got a lq4 in the garage that will be going into my nova, Im planning on a set of 243 heads, decent cam, ls6 intake manifold, headers, etc wont be a monster motor but should hold it own fairly well.
Ive read about the common problems that the t56's have in stock engine cars and cant decide if i want to buy a "Core" from my buddy at the wrecking yard for $500 and rebuild it with the upgraded parts to make it last and be done with messing around with it or if i want to pay $1500(seems to be the going rate for them) and get one that is "useable" from him, off of craigslist, off of here or similar forum, etc and risk it actaully being worth a **** when i t arrives and then wondering how long it will stay that way.
What do you guys recomend?
Roughly how much would i have into the parts to rebuild one and to fix the common problems?

Few points of reference here on price but...

If you have the tools and know-how to go through it correctly yourself, why not?

If you buy a core, it's a gamble. You might get lucky and end up being able to build it cheap, but odds are against you. Also, most "working" T56s need to be rebuilt. These trannys are very forgiving, so you can have one that works, but its just a matter of time before it starts giving you problems. I bought a "good working" T56 a few months ago. It ended up needing several parts, and would have been a $1250 build.
I sell them built and ready to go, with a warranty for $1900, no exchange required. Figure $100 for shipping, so $2k shipped. If you need a clutch too, I can make it a good package deal.

You could also get a level 1 rebuild from tick performance for about $1000 and they can build it with there own core for an extra $1000, so it would be about the same price as TDP. So that's also a good option you may want to consider, both Tick and TDP are very highly recomended sponsors.

Very tempting to just go that route when the time comes. Thinking I'm gonna keep an eye out for a core for a good deal for a little while as I'm saving up money and if a deal hasn't fallen into my lap I will just go that route.

If you keep an eye out in the classifieds, you can sometimes find really good deals on these, however they go fast.
I lucked out and found a level 2 built t56 with about ~1000 on the rebuild for $1500 shipped. The seller hadn't even listed it yet, he had use started his m6-a4 swap and bought some a4 parts from me, asked if i wanted one and we made a deal. so they are out there, just gotta look.
With that being said, the TDP and Tick prices are very reasonable and definitely worth consideration.
