Default T56 no 5th gear

I have a t56 in my 76 vette, I got it used and was told it was good. It has 1-4, 6th and reverse but no 5th. If I try to shift into 5th from 4th it goes into the spot just fine but acts like it is in neutral, then if I go from 6th to 5th it won't go all the way into the position. I don't mind tearing into anything, I am pretty mechanically inclined but I am a little nervous about opening up a T56.

Your testing would point to the engagement teeth having sheared off the 5th drive gear.

Ideally yes, but if sheared, you've run metal throughout the trans and a full rebuild is probably in order. You really won't know until the trans is taken apart.

If the description of the problem isn't totally correct, you may just have broken synchro keys and/or fork pad damage that is keeping 5th from fully engaging. Again, won't know until it's taken apart.

why would you think a bad fork? If it was a bad fork I don't think it would go all the way into the 5th position from 4th and not go all the way from 6th. In my opinion if it were a bad fork it would do the same thing from any gear, and I also think it would have some effect on 6th gear.

You said that you have no 5th gear right? Even when it feels like it goes all the way into gear?

you're 5-6 fork might be bent or its loose...doubt its broken since you can shift into 6th but that's just guessing at this point.

The synchronizer assembly may not be even becoming close to the 5th gear ring teeth.

Logic tells me that if you check/change your trans fluid it might give you some indication.

I would drain fluid and run one of those "pen like" magnets through the drain plug hole...see if anything sticks. its a cheap way of checking...
