Upgrading clutch Q's
Do I have to do the adj master cyl at the same time or can I get away with the stock one with a drill mod for a bit then upgrade later? Also, should I geta new flywheel or just keep the stocker and get it re surfaced?
thanks

Since I have '98 Z, I checked with 3 different parts depts. at 3 different dealerships in my area. All said that I need to update the slave, but that the master is the same as what came in my '98.
My friend, who has been doing drivelines for Chevy for 12 years said he did a parts history check and that I will NOT need to change out the master.
The slave has been updated, and I will be getting it.
Oh, and I plan to resurface my flywheel, it only has 11k miles on it.
I'm poor, what can I say....

i have a 99Z, that i just changed the hydrolics, i bought a stock 02 master and did the drill mod, and could not get the quick disconnect to fit in the 99 slave, i tried everything to get it in there... so i went to gmpartsdirect and got an 02 slave...and the quick disconnected snapped right in. to me that would say that they are not the same, but thats just what i did.. try it with the 02 slave and your 99 master and let me know what you get..
i got the spec stage 3i in my car..and all i did was buy a used flywheel w/3k miles resurfaced, my stocker was gone, and it works great

Yeah, I'm doing the opposite- - - swapping to the 02 slave but keeping the '98 master. My tech friend at the dealership INSISTS that this will take.
I'll let y'all know....

I just did my clutch. 18K miles on the car.
I bought an 01+ slave and reused my stock master. I did the drill mod too. I went with teh Z06/LS6 clutch kit. $322 and it came with a new flywheel.
When I first started looking into a replacement clutch, I just figured on resurfacing my flywheel since it only had 18K miles on it. The more I looked into it, I found the factory flywheel can only have .020 machined off. I figured as bad as much clutch was, it was going to need a lot more than that. So you should get a new flywheel.
First clutch replacments on 98-00 cars should expect to spend around $450 if you go with the LS6 setup. Don't forget transmission fluid (i'd reccomend GM Synchromesh - 4qts), a LONG extension (I have a 3/8 drive 24"), 3/8 universal, and a big bottle of brake/hydraulic fluid. Get at least 2 other friends and make it a Saturday project.
If you feel like you *need* a Spec, check out these threads on the LS6 setup...
