Default Cheaper alternative

Hi all, I'm looking for a cheaper alternative box then a T56 for an LS1.

At the moment I can't afford a T56 and sort my engine out so I need a cheaper box until I can recoup some money for a T56

short answer, no

with enough $ the TKO 600 and adapter plate "may" be a possibility but that certainly would not be "cheaper"

salvage yard one from a wreck would likely be the "cheapest" replacement...but still $

Do it right and do it once. Even if you have to wait, you'll be glad you did.

Being in the uk we don't have salvage yards that have these in unfortunately and we also don't get things for the price you american or australians do

You may read up on all of LS1Delorean's posts:

^ He has taken a Renault transmission and successfully fitted it to his LS1. That being said, he is also doing this with a transmission to cover his rear engine configuration so I suspect his particular UN1 transmission will not work for you. Perhaps some variants of it or other like units will?

Not sure what car or skill set you have, but i have used a Toploader 4 spd @ 700rwhp for years without issue. I did build a bellhousing to make it work, here's a link to a page that includes pictures of the homemade bellhousing fabrication... http://tntrc.com

I will get reading his posts now. I am starting to think I may just need to save for a T56 or TR6060.

Dude that looks impressive! Well beyond my skill set. My car is a BMW E46.

OP

doing a LSx transplant into the BMW....you would be better off getting a T56 for a LSx. The $ and fabrication to get some form of other donor transmission to "bolt up" is doable with enough $ and fabrication skills. In the end My $.02 is the $ alone, let alone time & fabrication, would be more than just buying a LSx T56. Also whatever the donor transmission is other than a T56 you need one that will handle the HP & TQ of the LSx motor. For example the NV3500 would break behind a stock LS1. So would the older tremac (Borg Wrner) 5 speeds they put in pre-93 Camaros

with that said mating another trans like a TKO may also be doable. Companies like Weir & Kesler make various adapter plates, bellhousings. More for putting a TKO or T56 on older (50-70) american muscle cars that had a period correct 4 speed tranny

No idea if this will work or not, but perhaps a Getrag 6-speed from a 540i, 330i (steep ratios for 330i and only 1 overdrive), or something like that?

Just a thought - Is finding a T56 from an Aston Martin a possibility? It seems as though this is common practice in the UK: https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...-t56-help.html
