Default LM7 and NV3500 thought?

Hello,
since the LS1 are starting to get fearly expensive i was thinking of the LM7 engine.

Any thoughts on the LM7 engine?
with the NV3500 or any other Manual transmission?

its gonna be used in my 1972 pontiac firebird,
with maybe a cam upgrade.

a friend did the NV3500 in his 240 swap, he's very not happy with it...poor gearing, sloppy, hard to shift quickly, and the shifter location is way forward compared to something like a t56

You took the words right out of my mouth. It's a light duty truck transmission, nothing performance about it.

Just an idea, you could put a 300ZX 5 speed transmission behind your LM7 while keeping costs down. This adapter plate is only $600 and 300ZX performance clutches are dirt cheap as well.

I've found these transmission all over car-part.com for under $250

There is a guy here in Austin with an S13 240sx and the exact setup you are asking about. From his feedback is exactly as above. Feels like a tank and thats in comparison to a T56 which I thought was annoying for daily driving so I cant imagine the difference.

I would do a 300zx or 350z trans if you can shell out the extra cash. Much better transmissions which have already proven to be much more capable and more enjoyable. 300zx trans can be had for < $500 all day. The JDM importers can usually get them with lower mileage too.

Thank alot for your reply guys.
u confirmed my suspicous, so the NV3500 is out of the question.

what about the engine itself? does teh LM7 feels like a "truck" engine?
with aut or manual trans.

i*m gonna do some reading on the nissan transmission.
and if anyone got any tips for other manual transmissions that might work it will be gr8 =)

I'm running an LM7 with a T10 4 speed in my 72 Olds. Great motor with broad torque curve. The manual makes trans makes it more fun. Perfect for a DD or weekend car.
I was planning on some upgrades, but discovered it was fine as is.
