Default Cast Your Vote: Monster LT1-S vs. McLeod RST

Fellas,

I'm in the process of doing an A4 to M6 swap on my 01' Bird, and have everything pieced together so far with the exception of clutch and hydraulics.

Tick "Level 2" Rebuilt T56
MGW Shifter
Factory Pedal Assembly
HAWKS Reman Upper Shifter Console and Boots
Reusing BMR Trans/Torque Arm Mount Crossmember Can anyone verify this will work?

Originally I was kicking around the idea of a T56 Magnum before I found a deal on this transmission. I talked to Bob @ D&D performance, a super helpful guy and when we started talking clutches he recommended the Monster LT1-S. I was originally looking at the McLeod RST and have great reviews on both. Pricing is very similar it seems. See links below, which are Tick Performances "Clutch and Hydraulic Upgrade Kits". They seem to have everything I need to make my swap complete.

Monster LT1-S Clutch, Tick Master, GM Slave, Speed Bleeder, 28lb FW - $1,420

McLeod RST Clutch, Tick Master, GM Slave, Speed Bleeder, Balanced FW - $1,613

I'm looking for any opinions or experiences on one vs. the other, also opinions on lightened vs full weight flywheel. This will be going in a (currently) cam only full suspension 90% street car. It might very well see some boost in the coming year but will never be a max-effort build, just a fun street car.

Thanks in advance for any help!

IDK if the Monster twin requires a larger MC but the RST/RXT does not per McLeod. Billy @ McLeod emailed me to say their clutch wants the stock hydraulics in terms of MC bore size.

While I have the McLeod there are many happy Monster owners so I suspect either will be good

for street and drag go with a standard FW vs lightweight.

10-4 good info, I remember reading this somewhere. Do the factory dead-pedal condition not become an issue later on down the road as it ages? Hoping to never have to tear back into this thing for many many years!

I did my research and decided to go with the LT1-S and lightweight flywheel. Keeping my stock master and got a new slave and speed bleeder. I will be installing it this winter.

What was your reason for going with the lightweight flywheel and the stock master instead of a Tick Adjustable?

Just curious!

I run the RST with their lightweight steel flywheel. I'm really happy with it. It drives like stock and holds my power with no problem

Does anyone know the user name for Billy at McLeod? I thought I knew it but apparently I was wrong. Looks like its time to chat with him for a final sway toward the RST....

Sorry for the late post, I thought I had said something in here.

I would say if you are comparing the LT1-S and RST I would go with the one that is actually rated for racing, has three times the warranty, and is cheaper.

You don't have to use a tick master, but it will work just fine with our Monster. Just keep in mind, that it will make the pedal stiffer, and shrink the engagement window on any clutch.

Give us a shout if you have any questions.

Stock MC for the larger engagement window, lighter pedal, and it's easier and free.

With the lightweight FW I'm hoping for a little quicker revs. All the posts and threads I read on lightweight setups seems like no one regrets the decision. I'll find out in the spring..

Good call! Fairly new to the M6 world but have had enough buddies struggle with the stock hydraulics with dead pedal etc. but thinking back now, most of those cars were higher mileage. When I decided to make this swap I automatically assumed I needed to go aftermarket like the Tick unit to avoid the issues of the stock MC. Sounds like they're fine for the McLeod and the Monster when starting with a new fresh OEM MC.

I too have read that almost everyone with a lightened FW doesn't regret the decision.

With about 65k miles on mine I am sticking with the original, not buying a new one.

Ive had both but dont know if i can really give a fair assesment due to the fact i bought the rst used and had issues with it. Even though it was supposed to be low mileage and looked almost new for some reason i had to buy a tick mc for it to work properly and it only lasted a year of normal driving. Thats not the norm but that is what happened in my case. I now have the lt1-s and really like it. Both drive great but one thing i like about the lt1-s is it is essentially a c7 clutch converted to work with our cars so it should last a long time when street driven

Ended up going with the LT1-S, standard weight flywheel and a Tick Adjustable MC. Hopefully I'll have my own opinion on this setup in a few weeks!

I am using the Monster LT1-R making 935 rwhp and it has been the best aftermarket clutch I have ever used. Pedal is not much stiffer than stock and it holds my power with ease. I am using stock master and slave with also. Steve has been very helpful and answered all of my questions very quickly, even though some were dumb and not even clutch related. Great company and great product. I switched from a Mcleod to a Monster and would never go back.
