Default T56 going “through” gear under heavy acceleration

Hey guys,

I just bought my 1997 trans am ws6 with a t56 a couple months ago. Today I was running the car pretty hard, a lot harder then I normally do. When I went to shift from 2-3, the shift lever seemed to go “through” the gear (The lever went past the normal point when it is in gear) and the car hit a false neutral in what should’ve been 3rd. I immediately took it out of what should’ve been 3rd, and I put it in 4th. The car seemed to shift fine after that point, up until I started driving it harder again. This time, the car shifted into 3rd fine, but it seemed like it went “through” fourth gear. I tried to re create this a couple times, and it seems like it only happens when the revs are high and when I shift fast, because when I shift slower, the car goes into gear just fine. I think this might have something to do with the short shifter the previous owner installed, as I’ve never had a problem before and the car shifts fine when I drive it normally. Has anyone else experienced this or know what this could be?

Not sure what you're exactly trying to convey but it almost sounds like your clutch pressure plate is being overwhelmed by the centrifugal force created by the acceleration of the engine.

Yeah sorry if it was a little bit confusing, another way I could put it is that it feels as if the shifter is getting stuck between 3-5 when I shift into 3rd, and 4-6 when I shift into 4th. If you don’t mind my asking, what makes you think that this is a clutch issue?

Yeah that would be one of my first guesses, would I have to pull the tranny to fix a bent shift fork?

Yes Sir. It has to be removed and taken apart.

Ok, I really hope it isn’t that lol. Is there anything else it could be? Would pulling off the shift boot show me anything useful? Maybe if the shift cup is worn out or something?

Does your shifter have adjustable stops? I know some of them do.

I have no clue, I’ve only had the car a month or so and I haven’t dug into anything yet really besides replacing the oil pressure regulator. Previous owner didn’t know what kind of short shifter was on the car, he just knew that it had one.

Pull the shifter boot off. At the base of the shifter, where it bolts to the trans, if it does have adjustable stops, there will be a bolt on two sides.
