Talking smog issues

I've been looking into doing the a4 to m6 swap. I spoke to a tranny shop about it and they advised me that they get 30+ calls a day b/c they did a tranny swap and no longer passed smog.

From everyone that I speak to and common sense I dont think this is true but I'd like to put this to an end.

Anyone do a swap and pass smog?

Also if anyone out there with a t56 and wants to do this swap to an a4 please PM me. My 98 TA has 42k miles, never seen track and always babied.

well it will pass smog, but your going to have to get either the M6 computer or get yours retuned - then it will not throw codes and pass smog

Will anything bad happen if you drive the car with out getting a tune. I want to do the swap and have almost everything but I want to get a few more mods before I get it tuned. Will the SES light just be on if I do the swap and dont get it tuned right a way.

I hooked the dark green and purple w/white stripe and car still wouldn't start. I tried every wire coming off the park/neutral switch. nothing. THen i found a green and white striped wire and hooked it to the dark green wire and it cranked. I just turned the ignition to on positon and pushed the sensor in and it started. I didn't have to turn the key all the way forward. Need help fellas.

Does anyone know where I can get a M6 upper console? I've been checking around, but no one has them. GM apparently discontinued making them, so I can't order a new one like I had planned.

I am about to buy a T56 setup for a swap. Does it matter that I dont have the button on the ignition that you have to press/turn before you can start the car? Also is there a difference from the 98 T56 from the other 99-02? I have a 2000 Z28 A4 and want to know if I need anything else for the conversion. Thanks

Hi , just finished swapping the car into t56 with ls7 clutch + flywheel + B&M shifter + raptor shift light ... I drove the car and it was ok

The Problems I have now :::

1-Hot air coming from the center console and i can feel it on my feet
2-The car starts without pressing the clutch pedal !!! unsafe sometimes !!
3-The trunk doesn't open by the switch !! only by key

Does anyone know how to solve any of these !!!

The hot ait sux, what I did was rivete some sheetmetal all around the tunnel, and put some home depot frost king around the whole tunnel, now it's quiet + not hot anymore.

For the car not starting you need to run the wires that are near the center console to the clutch pedal, you probably just tied them together, I forgot which colors exactly, look in the walkthrough document

The trunk is the same thing, you didn't tie the wires together correctly

Good luck ! Enjoy it! another thing to check out, do your reverse lights work? Probably not, you need to run the other 2 wires in the center console to the transmission

Total of wires are 6
2 for trunk
2 for reverse lights
2 to start the car/clutch/cruise control

not sure of the physical differences between 98 t56 and newer, but i know pcm wiring is WAY different,

The buton doesn't matter, I don't have it on mine, it works fine

I would recommend you get the 2000 m6 wire harness, it will make everything plug and play... way easier

all of the 98-02 f-body t-56's are the same, the wiring differences only comes from the PCM. But I put a 2002 t-56 in my 98 and had no problems whatsoever. all the sensors and solenoid connectors are the same. And everything bolts up the same, same bellhousing, input shaft, tail shaft, everything.

Mr Trick... the wiring colors are the same for the wires at the harness from the a4 shifter assy. The PCM wire colors are different however. So the safety start switch, reverse lights, and trunk release wires are wired up the same, however if you want your reverse lockout to work properly, it is different from the 99+ years. I can't remember and don't have the means to look it up over here in the desert, but I moved a red wire on the PCM harness that ran to the A4 transmission connector, and used that for the lockout solenoid. I believe I found the info for it in this sticky.

Alright, I read about 6 pages and really didn't see anything about M6 to A4. Any special guidelines to follow? What about the setting in the ECM? I've got a 98, will any 98+ A4 work? Also, if anyone wants to trade a functional A4 for my M6 plus all parts, I'd be interested. Only reason I'm doing this is b/c of a turbo setup.
