Default Should I get WS6 w/ A4 or M6

Hey all, I will be getting a 98-02 WS6 hopefully soon and was wondering the ups and downs as well as your recomendations on which transmission to get. Lately I've been driving around town in my father's (german) V8, and I kinda feel that a car this fast doesn't really need stick. What do you guys think. ~Future T/A owner

It all depends on your preference. What do you plan on doing with the car? Most guys like the fact they have control of the car and therefore get a M6. If you plan on making your car a all out drag car an auto will be more consistent.

i love the m6,i've never been an auto guy. i love to drag race if that is what you want, for most the auto is the way to go for that. if you want more fun driving, rowing the gears on a m6 is more fun. stock for stock the m6 is faster and gets better gas mi. add a stall to the a4 and you better be a good driver in a m6.

What AREA 52 said. I have an A4 and it runs well. But i have always dreamed about a NBM SS M6. Its all up to you. Let me tell you this, A4s are great, M6 are great, but get an m6 that way if you REALLY dont like the m6 down the road, swap it for an A4 and then sell your trans for some $$ and then you can help pay for your set up since it is cheeper to go from M6 to A4 and REALLY EXPENSIVE TO GO A4 to M6. But i do warn this. The first mod i would do to your m6 is a 12 bolt. Good luck buddy..

I've driven both cars. I own an M6 Firehawk and I have to say the M6 is more fun. But drag racing I've shifted into 5th a couple times instead of third. That makes for a pretty bad 1/4 time.

FIREHAWK0220-you hit 5th and not 3rd a few times? you poor baby. i hit first and not 3rd while in 2nd gear at 6,800rpm's. what do you think happened? i'll tell ya,i spun two berrings and broke a piston in the motor. i now have a all forged shortblock and a pro 5.0 shifter w/1.5in cut off. i've never missed a gear again.

I am 27 years old and in the past 11 years I have owned my share of F-bodies (listed in order of ownership):
-1984 Camaro 300HP 350 carb A4 custom shift kit
-1991 Formula 305 TBI A4 custom shift kit
-1988 Iroc-Z 305 TBI A4 custom shift kit
-1995 Formula 350 LT1 A4
-1989 Formula 305 TPI A4 custom shift kit
-1987 Iroc-Z 350 TPI A4 custom shift kit
-1999 Camaro SS 346 LS1 M6 see sig for mods
-2000 Ws6 T/A 346 LS1 M6 see sig for mods
-1998 Z28 346 LS1 A4 see sig for mods

At any given moment within 1991 and now I always had three F-bodies simultaneously. As you can see until 1999 every car I have had was an automatic. All the automatic transmissions were/are A4s (th-700r4 or 4L60E) and all except one had a custom shift kit. My 1999 SS was the first manual trans F-body I ever had or for that matter ever drove. My 1984 Camaro had a mild 2500 rpm stall converter but all of the other A4 equipted F-bodies had stock stalls. I currently have the SS, the WS6 and the Z28; the Z28 is only driven on occassion because it's boring to me. My opinion is the M6 is the ONLY option to consider, unless you plan to use the car for mainly drag racing and then you'll need an aggressive stall converter, shift kit, trans cooler, and gears.

There is no better feeling then slamming through 6 gears and having complete control of the cars drivetrain, IMHO!

Horror stories like that have been good at making sure I pay attention to my shifts. Believe me I'd hate to do something like that. I've never had my RPMS that high either.

Of course I've only ever really pushed the car once or twice.
