Do you need to take the new flywheel, along with your old one to a machine shop to have it balanced the same? I thought this wasn't necessary but a friend says it is. Thanks!

No no no... I know to throw the old stuff out, and I know the new flywheel doesn't need to be resurfaced. Does it need to be re-BALANCED to match the old flywheel? We put a street twin in a friends 97 SS, and we installed a billet flywheel. It had to be balanced to work properly, the instructions said. Isn't an LS1 internally balanced, so the dampener and flywheel are zero balanced? I thkn that makes sense, when you put an underdrive pulley on an LT1 you still keep your stock balancer, but on an LS1 you dont.

The clutch and flywheel in this set are matched. If you look hard enough, you should see a serial number etched in both the flywheel and pressure plate, and they should match. They do this because the set is balance matched on the assembly line. Notice that the pressure plate will only go on the flywheel one way. Seprate, the two parts may be out of balance, but matched together, their respective unbalance cancel out each other.
Bottom line, The clutch and pressure plate is zero balanced as low as possible out of the box.
Maybe this bulletin is where your friend got his information. It is in the kit for LT1 replacement clutches from LuK. But it excludes F-bodies that do not use a dual mass flywheel.http://www.lukclutch.com/support/bul...l?number=LB181
Also, I think the the LT1's are externally balanced.
