Default New owner! NEED HELP!!!

I just bought a beautiful and powerful '02 SS camaro but I think I broke it. I've had it for about 5 days now and the 5th gear is out. Every other gear works fine but when I try to put it into 5th it doesn't go at all. When I release the clutch it just starts grinding. I've tried putting it in gear gently, throwing it hard and even tried wiggling it into gear. I get the same grinding every time. Sometimes it I can feel it start grinding b4 I even let out the clutch, I just put it into 5th and feeling the hard vibrations from it. I have no idea what could be wrong. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!?!?

Sounds like your synchros could be going out.
I had a similar experience with other transmissions, so I dont have much more info to give you. BTW How many miles are on your transmission?

Is 6th gear out as well???

5th and 6th are kinda tied into each other..

1 through 4th okay huh? Then 5th grind?, okay then try 6th. If 6th is okay you probibly broke some teeth off the 5th gear assembly itself, though highly unlikely.. Hwere you shifting hard when all of a sudden this happened? If you shifted hard and this problem is the result then the problem of poor hydrolics caused you to grind 5th causing teeth to break off.. If 5th and 6th dont work i'll then put my money on the synchros..

Keep us informed...

My 6th gear still works fine. From what I remember it happened outta nowhere. I wasn't shifting hard or anything, I believe I was just headin down the freeway and tried shifting into 5th and got the grind. Every other gear seems to work just fine. The car only has 21k miles on it...and ty for your .02 everyone.

I would now say that with what you told me, I would say the reverse lockout sillanoid not allowing you to get into 5th properly..

I got the same problem, but mine came from hard shifting. I don't think its from the syncros, since 5th and 6th work together

5th/6th gears have a shared synchro assembley just like the other 4 gears. It sounds like the engagement teeth on the 5 gear maybe trashed, it could also be the 5th gear side of the slider is torn up. The shift fork pads are probably toast also. The shift fork itself is steel.

Default Update On Condition Of Transmission

Now when I put it into sixth gear it knocks it back up about a centimeter and also feels notchier getting it into gear. The warranty takes a week to transfer so I hope it makes it through it.

5th and 6th gear are a different set than 1-4, so hard shifting into 5th and 6th are independent of shifting into 3rd or 4th.
