Which clutch to buy? Star, Cartek, or Ram?
I am posting this for a buddy of mine so that I can get some more opinions on the subject. He just ordered a Star clutch for $900 (that is not a typo...he ordered the POS boat anchor for $900) and I told him that he would be much better off with either a Cartek or Ram setup.
He told me, "I thought you were happy with your Star clutch." Well, I am happy that the POS has not grenaded on me like it has for a friend of mine and countless others on this board. Now I feel bad that he has ordered the POS b/c of something I might have said so I wanted to post this so that I could get some folks to back me up when I say that he needs to cancel his order and go with one of the other two.
Thanks for your opinions,
Chris G

They aren't POS clutches...he paid way toooo much for that....I payed $489 for my stage 3 kevlar disc clutch...and it works good...the people who call them POS clutchs don't break them in right...they beat the hell out of them right away...I've had mine on my car for 2000 miles and its held very well...its a little agressive for the street...but its an awesome clutch...I got it for sale in the Classifieds for $300-350...
I would reccomend this clutch to anyone...

Ahh for that much he could get a McLeod!
I beat the crapola outta my Mcleod about 13k miles ago and put it through MANY Et Drag/Street launches at 5500rpm with NO problems yet.

Another vote for the Mcleod. I have the Rev Lok II clutch with a sinitered iron disk and it is holding up well to the revlimiter dumps on et drags.

So they have the McLeods figured out now? The last time I heard about McLeods people were venting about how the twin disc wouldn't work properly. Did y'all have to modify yours in any way?
Thanks,
Chris G

i would cancel the order not because its crappy, but because he got ripped off.. for a stock or bolt on car a $500 spec clutch will work great, and it comes with a new fly and to bearing so you dont need to get that stuff resurfaced and have an extra day without your car.
remember to lockite the bolts!

Re: Which clutch to buy? Star, Cartek, or Ram?
I am running the same setup as Justin and it has been holding to low-mid 1.6 60' w/ ease. I have over 60 passes on this clutch now with no signs of slipping. Last Sunday, I made 6 back to back passes within 15 minutes of each other and the clutch didn't even budge! Just a warning though, this clutch is very aggressive for street driving. It took me a week or two to get used to it. It just grabs HARD!

Actually, he is making over 700rwtq on a 100 shot. He definitely needs more clutch. I'll turn him onto that McLeod setup. Thanks Jason and Justin.
BTW Jason, I'm going to have a few questions for you in the future reguarding Thunder Racing and GTP heads/cam since I see you have had success with them. I'm buying a new Formula shortly and I'm looking very hard at getting Thunder to do the heads/cam install using some 5.3L stage II truck heads and a GTP cam around the size of a T1 or C1.
Thanks again,
Chris G

This is for Ron, right? Where the HECK did he order that from to get charged that much for it? That sucks...
BTW my Cartek is doing fine now (after a fluid 'adjustment'), and so is the car. Had an interesting run in with a Saleen today - didn't have the bottle with me but didn't really need it.

Yeah, I am trying to find a good clutch for Ron. I am not sure where he ordered the clutch, but he sure did have to assume the position and grab his ankles when he payed the bill.
I'm glad to hear that your car is running well, John. I haven't heard much from you lately. Don't be a stranger.

Re: Which clutch to buy? Star, Cartek, or Ram?
Hi guys, I just went through the clutch experience on my ls1 for the 4th time, this time I needed something that could handle a 200 shot, so I got on Jegs and found a clutch from a company called Hayes, Hayes sells a performance metal based clutch for the LS1, it holds up to 700 HP, I paid 280 dollars for the complete clutch assembly, I have had it on for two months and have never had a clutch this strong that holds this well with minimun chatter, I know that Harlan has the same one I do and I think I totally got my moneys worth on this one, I can even chirp 3rd to 4th now, this is just my experience so you may wanna check them out....Troy

Re: Which clutch to buy? Star, Cartek, or Ram?
Since you guys figured me out Ill jump in here. I was GOING to order the Star Spec III. The reason the clutch was 900to the door was because it wasnt the normal clutch you guys have been buying. I was looking into a modified Star. The PP weighs in 5lbs lighter than stock. Also I was including a billet aluminum flywheel in that price for almost 400 dollars.
I havent totally made up my mind on a clutch yet. If I were to make a decision right now, I would go with the Ram VDS setup from Rapid Motorsports. 939 bucks with everything including hydralics and billet flywheel. I am still looking into Cartek and McCleod as well. Feel free to give me your experiences, Im gonna wait a few days before ordering so I can make the right decision.

ah well he didnt say you opted for the aluminum flywheel.. of course that will cost $300 more..
for 700 horse.. i wouldnt trust a spec, or any clutch to last long.. even if it's rated for that..
i would imagine a company would be willing to set up a deal with you (money) so they could say their clutch is in a 700rwhp ls1.
fwiw.. godspeed i do believe had a spec clutch in his stroker twin turbo, and didnt have it for long, but it worked great before he wrecked it... i think that was over 600 at the tires

I kinda thought that myself, so far no real offers and Im not the type to ask for handouts and such.
