Default First Impression - Ram Cintered clutch

After thinking about it I had ARE put in a Ram Clutch, the heavy duty cintered iron one since it worked so well in Harlans car.

I pulled the Spec out and they said it was in excellent condition(anyone want to buy it, never gave me trouble).

I thought back and forth about driveability and to tell you I am amazed.

I drove it back from Toronto today and scooted around for a bit. They install Mcleod's new adjustable billet master and that thing is easily 4 times the pedal pressure of the stock unit, but if it works who cares

The engagement is right at the top and quick, but its very easy to pull away from lights and smooth shifting, no chatter at all if you take off decently.

I was amazed at how smooth it is, my only call will to be sure its a heavy duty unit since its so smooth, everyone else reports its a pretty brutal piece.

Maybe the HD Mcleod unit helps it out, but for the money its hard to beat.

Haven't really beat on it yet, have to take care of some small things on the car tommorow and get it over to the dyno, then I'll start beating on it once we turn up the boost a bit.

Iron? Did he switch? The pics he had posted were the bronze. That's what I installed last fall. A great clutch for serious cars!

I'm thinking of installing the Mcleod mc, the factory piece is such a P.O.S.

your right dave, 6 puck bronze

it's a metalic disc in any case.

I may be going with something new in the future. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve

Glad it's working for you eric. it's about time you got a working clutch

Bronze, my mistake.

I had thought Iron and when I mentioned Iron everyone agreed so I thought I was right

Today will be the good test, I'm taking it over to get some A/F readings and check a few things out so I can go beat on it today and see how it holds up.

Now I just have to find a new set of Nitto's in stock in Michigan.

What are the part numbers (or names) that you used? I need a strong clutch and Ram is sounding good from people who have used them. My entire clutch system is stock, what all do I need?

TIA

After 2 days its time for second impressions.

Had a ignition issue to take care of and did that yesterday, turned down the FP and the car was back to normal so I had a chance to take it out and give it a few runs.

First WOT run I took with it I smelled something...then after the next one it really started to smell, we couldn't figuire out what it was. On the third one we realized it was the clutch.

It stunk up the whole car pretty bad, but it held. I drove it 350 miles without getting into the boost so it never really broke in under hard acceleration, the first 10 WOT runs must have made it seat, or there was something on the disc that burnt off.

The smell is gone now and it grabs real hard. With the smell going away the chatter showed up, its not bad, very liveable for the power the clutch is supposed to handle.

My guess is, whatever was making it smell also was helping the disc slip during take off and thats why it was so smooth.

I can live with a little chatter, its very short, unlike my Mcleod which would shake the car through the entire travel of the pedal, 50 percent of the time I drive off without shudder/chatter.

Taking some time getting used to drive it though, the engagement point is right at the top and there is alot more pedal pressure, at least 3-4 times the stock unit. This is with the Mcleod master though, might be different on a stock master.

It grabs hard enough for me to spin the tires in 4th at 80-90mph on the freeway

I'll be moving up the boost next week along with a few other changes and I'll let everyone know how it handles that, right now its probably taking about 650-670ft lbs of torque at the motor moving 4000lbs.

I would adjust the Mcleod Master to get the engagement back to midway....it could be slipping under wot if it's too close to the top of the pedal travel.

Well the smell has gone away totally and it been holding up just fine, but I'll call Mike at Ram tommorow and see what he thinks.

500 miles and no problems, and ALOT of hard running today, something sure is different about the car though. Today I took a hard run and the tires broke loose at 100mph just as it ran out 3rd gear, it did that yesterday too at about 120 in 4th gear. Plus a few times in 3rd at about 50mph, that I expected but not at those higher speeds, forget first and second

Having a blast with the car, this is the first time in 3 years that I've had it completed and really ready to run before June.

My clutch did not have any smell, but I was meticulous in cleaning the surfaces at install.

Like yours, mine had zero chatter at first, actually smoother than my stock clutch. After a few hundred miles it developed slight chatter which is very easy to manage with a little more rpm.

My pedal pressure is nowhere near 3x stock, so I'm not sure what you have going on there. Must be related to the mc change and amount of fluid it moves. Anyway I KNOW it can't be as bad as my old 440-6 Cuda clutch, it was insane.

No, they just broke loose at that speed.

It was not on a shift.

Even before when the SPEC clutch worked with that amount of power and possibility of tire slippage you never knew if the clutch held or not, but the feel of this clutch doesn't leave anything to the imagination as to whether it slipping or not.

Someone help me pick up JAW! LOL.
Congrats on the setup! Are you going to go to the track and try to get in the 10's.

Thanks.
Do you have a good 12 bolt or 9inch rear?

It'll goto the track as soon as they are open, and I'm hoping for 10.80's for a starter. I have a Moser 12 bolt rear end w/ 3.42's.

Last year there was always the wonder of what would break next at the track, now I think I have that taken care of.

I'm going to sell my ET Streets and get a set of Quicktimes instead, then I'll be ready.

As far as the disk material, honestly I don't know, I just asked Nick to get me the Ram clutch that had the highest torque rating.

My guess is he put in the 6130.

Finally Eric, the car is running like it should. Congrats.

I will never get over the looks you get on the highway when you go to pass someone and get a little sieways

Even in 3rd, WOT is a no-no beyond 4k. I need to get another set of BFG's. Nittos just don't cut it for daily driver tires

My nitto's don't do too bad considering their excellent double duty in the rain, plus they handle better than the BFG's.

On my way home from APE on Saturday I had a guy zoom upto me in an older 240 Z, flew past me the motor sceaming. I got next to him, hit it in 3rd and blew the tires off around 65-70mph and slid, he CLAPPED! I thought he was going to **** himself

I just ordered a fresh set of Nitto's, I know the BFG is a better tire but I really did have decent luck with mine except for from a dead stop.
