Default Shim for a Spec stage 2

Today I received a new Spec stage 2 clutch included their steel flywheel and a metal shim.
The shim is about 2.5 mm thick (0.1 inches).
Is that normal to move the slave cylinder so far away from the tranny?
I ask because I always read of people installing a "green" shim or a "thick paper shim" so I'm surprised to see mine is metal and so thick.

Thank you - Stefano

i have the stage II without the shim, and im having problems. the clutch is not totally disengaging. i think it needs the shim. id rather have a tighter fit than not have the clutch work as it should.

I called Spec (oh yeah, I forgot this useful tool: the PHONE ).
They said the green shim was a little weak. The new one is on metal and it has the same thickness as the old one.

I also find out why there is a shim: I put the stock clutch assembly (flywheel, clutch disk and pressure plate) on a table close to the same assembly supplied by Spec. The "fingers" (right name?) of the stock clutch are at least 1/4" higher than those of the Spec clutch. For some reason Spec makes a "skinnier" clutch and then supplies a shim.
Don't ask me why!!!!

is this really needed in all applications? I have a spec I in the car now (I really don't remember installing the shim) which has just started to slip so knowing it finally served it's life, I got a spec 3 to replace it and a centerforce flywheel will I need to order this shim and put me down even longer?

So what are the deminsions on this shim? Is it something you can pick up at a hardware store or do I need to get ahold of Spec? Also where does this shim go?

Thanks guys...

the dementions are in a similar post.

I belive it's like the ls7 clutch setup where it mountd between the slave and trans (sandwitched)

I never had one and mine works fine too. I just was wondering if it was a issue with the slave extending too far since my slave did start leaking and I installed a new one

Guys, each of our LS based kits come with the shim. It is intended for use in F-body cars and is there to provide the correct dimensions (our plate is not like the stock SAC unit). That being said the shim is available from us if you need it so just give me a call if you need to order one. As for the older fiber shim, it would compress in time thus changing the geometry. This is why we have moved to the metal shim. For future reference it is .115 thick. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks!

so did you say in another thread that the shim is needed only 50% of the time. cuz im a little concerned i didnt use one. it musta been the thing that was sealed in the plastic cover on top of the pp when it came. there was nothing with the stickers except the papers....
