Default Car jumps out of third gear

My car jumps out of third gear regularly. Typically only when there is no load placed on it, sometimes it will kick it right out when i shift into third but very rarely. The car has a pro 5.0 shifter if that makes a difference. From what i have read on here i am assuming this could be the cause of a bent shift fork. Do i have anything to worry about or is a rebuild in my near future.

The car has almost 28,000 miles on it. Probably only about 12 track passes but plenty of spirited street driving. Do i have anything to be really worried about.

Yup, bent shift fork and damaged 3-4 synchro. I had the exact same problem. Eventually, you will be getting stuck in 4th with no hope of getting out without further damage. Get it fixed before it gets worse. And it will.

so why exactly does it get stuck in 4th gear? Mine has been acting up and giving alittle resistance when i try to take it out of 4th gear at a light or something.

Cant explain exactly why it happens. I'm no expert. I just know that it does happen, often. Just do a search for "stuck in 4th" or "popping out". That should give you an idea of how common it is on factory f-body T-56's. I just got package 2A done from T-56 Rebuilds about a month ago. Seems they did a real nice job. Steel 3/4 shift fork, new billet synchros, new blockers, new sliders, and bronze fork pads. At least now I know that fork will not bend like the stock aluminum one and screw up other things.
If you are having trouble with gears popping out by themselves or getting stuck in gear with just about no hope of getting it out short of kicking it with your combat boots on, GET IT REBUILT.

I dought the fork is bent. The only one I have ever seen bent or broken was this past week and it did alot of damage. The magnet broken, got loged inbetween the 3/4 fork and gear and that is what caused it to break. These forks are weak but can withstand quite a bit of abuse. Most likely a broken slider key like the other 500 that I have done.

so what what would your suggestion be to me. Is it time to start thinking about possibly rebuilding it stronger, or am i good to go. The car doesnt see much track time just alot of spirited street driving.

If it pops out of gear either a blocker rings is worn out or the keys are broken. The longer you wait the more expensive. Even if you do not race it still upgrade for peace of mind. It is just as cheap to upgrade as it would be to rebuild back to stock. I know most regular transmission shops charge about $1600 or so just for stock rebuilds and my packages start at $890 and go from there.

Thanks,
Amber

on a side note i would like to point out how shitty i feel it is that a car such as mine with only 28,000 miles on it is having this kind of a problem. GM killed the camaro and firebird with there poor designing IMO. Please do not get me wrong i love my car. Everytime i look at it sitting there in the driveway or take it for a drive it puts a smile on my face. But everytime i take it apart or somthing like this happens it makes me wonder what the Fu** GM was thinking

As stated before, bent 3/4 shift fork. Think about it, if it is bent and wont go all the way into 3rd, it may or will go too far into 4th...bent shift fork.

How did it get bent you ask??? Most get bent by missing 3rd gear.

any ideas whats wrong on my side? perhaps the same problem? how hard is it to change the shiftork? how about the sincrome? culd a normal mechanic or a tranny mechanic with little or no experience with T56's change thoes

New scenario:

The problem is popping out of **4th GEAR** unless you hold the shifter firmly in place while letting out the clutch, is it the same problem? A bent 3-4 shift fork?

Thanks!

Yes, only now more damage is occuring. You are up to shift fork, syncros, ans shift hub/sleeve assembly. The dogs have probably boken and/or dropped out of position. but actually these would be or should be replaced in a rebuild anyway.

Yay!! Will the damage keep getting worse if I continue to drive and/or race it?

Yes and the longer you wait the more likely you will need to replace gears. If the synchro teeth on the gear are damaged you will need to replace the synchro, the gear and the slider. Try to fix it as quick as you can and it should minimize the cost.

Thanks,
Amber

mine finally got stuck in 4th gear, but i muscled it out with a nice *thud* noise and now i no longer have 3rd or 4th gear. When I attempt to shift to third it does not "go in" to the gear it just sorta vibrates. I really have no idea whats wrong with it other than it needs rebuilt haha. Oh well...just another thing holding me back from my damn cam swap.

I took my car to the track the other night and it ran like a champ. Then on the last pass trapped about 113 and went to shift to nutruel and decellarate and it was stuck. Knocked it out and drove it and hour home. It tried sticking in fourth a couple of times but ran flawless the rest of the time.

Bent shift forks can definitely be avoided by installing an aftermarket shifter with bump stops. Especially when slamming gears in drag racing, its foolish not to have an aftermarket unit.

I have my Pro 5.0 set up so that during normal shifting I don't even touch the stops, but if I slam gears, it nails the stops perfectly
