Default No lube = T56 MELTDOWN! Pics...

To make a long story short, long stock truck driveshaft deflected at high speeds on the dyno and a couple of high speed runs on the interstate. It wabbled the rear bushing out which pushed the seal out. End result lost all fluid and didn't know it and about 20 miles later in 6th gear running 80mph and this happend.
No lubrication = melted gears and a hell of a lot of money.

Notice how blue 3rd gear is and the end of the mainshaft just from being so close to the heat.

Sorry about the damage.

How long is your driveshaft? What material? What diameter?

that hapened to my dad in his Daily driver 95 gmc 1500. it rolled the teeth over smooth though our input shaft was not as melted as yours, it also destroyed the bearings and races, since it used non tapered plastic cage bearing most of the rollers where ground into particles, and ruint the 3rd and 4th gear synchros. that truck used a new venture or new process or something like that tranny and it was the hardest transmission to put together I have ever worked on. I guess you might well do new synchros and steel shift forks while you've got it apart.

Not sure of the driveshaft length yet. It was a factory steel one that I had shortened 2-3/4" for the T56 to fit. Getting a used HD aluminum aftermarket Inland shaft for an ext. cab that I will have shortened.

I have a 95 truck 5 speed that I have had apart twice. you are right it is a bitch to assemble.

You may want to measure your driveshaft and compare to the chart here:

http://www.markwilliams.com/driveshafttech.aspx

You may have exeeded the critical RPM of the driveshaft and caused it to bow.

This is what happened to my friend Jeff at Road America when his driveshaft bowed and let go.

Good link. I'm 99% sure that the bowing was causing it. It looks to be 3.5" dia and the shaft was turning 6500rpm several times. I'll check the length tonight when I get home.

Sorry to hear that, bad *** to see a silverado with a 6speed! Seems like everyone is going turbo these days.

Going to find a rebuilt one or have this one completely rebuilt? Again, that blows.

Thanks. Hopefully find a good used one and put my good shifting componenets in it. Thinking about a brand new Viper unit though.

That looks awesome. Sorry for the bad news, but thanks for the awesome pics. Gears meshing and spinning that fast do create a good amount of friction/heat without lubrication.

Give Liberty's a call, ask for Paul. They have some of the SRT10 truck T56s in stock. They can rework it and it will for on LS1s. Better material on the gear set. Same ratios as the Viper trans.

57-7/8" approx from centerline for ujoint to centerline. A Mark Williams mild steel 3.5" shaft is rated @ 5792rpm. So I guess the equivalent stock material shaft wouldn't like 6500
I may give liberty a call tomorrow. They fixed some gears off my old M22 muncie clutchless tranny several years ago. I'm sure they want more than i'm willing to spend right now. I can get a really nice LS1 tranny built or do it myself for the $1400-1700 range, Mikronite gears as well.
