Default pilot bearing removal: HELP!!!

I bought/ rented the pilot bearing removal tool from advance auto today, tried it and the damn thing didn't budge!!! I repeated the procedure twice and still no luck. I did read the instructions so operator error isn't a factor. It seems to be the original pilot bearing. The vehicle is a 00 Z28. Anyone have a clue how to get the thing out???

Do NOT pack behind with grease!!!!
You'll create a huge oil leak when you push the freeze plug into the hollow crank.

JB80, Any other spray lube, keep up what you're doing. Teeth need to be in perfect condition.

I rented one too and it didn't work for me either. I sorta chiseled mine out(literally), chunk by chunk. It worked for me and have had no problems at all, however, I would not recommend this and I will never do it again. The pucker factor was through the roof the entire 2 minutes.

I just did this two days ago. I rented the same tool from Advance. My pilot bearing was almost gone. No bearing material left. Barely 1/8" left of the piece itself. I didn't think the tool would work. We slapped it on there, and used a closed ended wrench on the T handle to get more leverage and just kept tightening and tightening. It eventually popped itself free. It took a LOT of twisting w/ that wrench though.

I just removed mine with the advance auto tool. Maybe I had a different tool though, as mine came right out.

We had used a slide hammer yesterday with the hook tool on it. It wouldn't budge. Heated it real quick w/ a torch...used the tool again...popped right out.

just keep working at it. I borrowed a slidehammer/bearing removal tool from a buddy. It took a lot of muscle and patience. Just keep working at it and it will come out. I totally destroyed all of the bearings inside of the pilot bearing first then it finally grabbed on the lip of the bearing and came out.

DO NOT!!!! Use the toilet paper or grease method!!!!

I first time out did the grease trick... I'm sure most of you now know how this ends up and I ended up just as most of you know

Searched around here and although i cannot find that post now heres what I did

I used a 1/2" nut ground down on the sides and a piece of threaded rod and a large 1/2" socket. I slid the ground down nut into the hole sideways and turned it around once in there and then threaded in the rod and nut placed the socket over top with a washer and another nut and presto a puller that worked smooth as butter.

AHHAH!! Found the original link with better explanation. About 3/4 way down

I used a slide hammer with the adapter for a small bearing. At first the tool would not go into the hole of the pilot bearing. So, I chipped out the inside ball bearings, and metal retaining ring. Then, the tool did go into the pilot bearing. After about 7 or 8 pulls of the slide hammer, it popped right out.

yeah i did the grease thing... that sucked, ended up pullin my motor to get the grease and freeze-out plug out of the crankcase... snap-on sells the tool to pull it out, its 130 bucks and so worth every penny.

i used a small boring bit and hogged the bearing out enough to get a nut behind the bearing then screwed a 8"piece of all thread into the nut, then slid a socket over the all thread then tightened a nut down on the socket and made my own puller. Tightned the nut down and pulled the bearing out

i had your same problem use a hammer and hit on the bearing as if you are trying to drive it foward a little to break it loose then use the removal tool...it worked for me.good luck
