Default 01' and 02' M6 f body owners with trani problems inside

01' and 02' M6 Owners inside
Please post here if you have owned or own an 01' or 02' f-body equiped with a m6 (t56) transmission and have issues with the trani, especialy with the 3rd gear in general. Your help is needed. I am trying to get a list in order to take to gm to get them to do something about fixing these problems and not giving us a run around. As far as I know there is not a tsb on the trani's yet; but I am gonna address this with the regional rep as soon as I have a list together.

I personaly had mine in my 02' go out at 700 miles. They rebuilt it. It went out again at 1200 miles, they replaced the trani with another 02' trani. It went out at 3500 miles they rebuilt it, and it has gone out again. I have seen many post on this matter, and heard from a person who used to work at borg werner before they sold out to tremec completely, that the internals of the t56 in the 01' and 02' are not aligning properly thus causing the sinchros to break and shift forks to bend.

If you could just post up a reply with you username, and if you would like an explantaion of your problems with your trani.

Thanks in advance,
Brad H

I have never had a problem with mine. knock on wood. i have 42000+ miles, and about 115 trips down the 1/4 mile and I power shift so I would think if it was a real bad problem i would have had mine go out already. maybe it wasafter a certain vin number that they did something wrong or changed a part in the tranny? i know 01 z lost 3rd gear. but thats the only other peron i know of for sure that has had this problem.

Brad, here's one! I completely destroyed my trans after 2nd gear came apart. I got all 4 tranny gears, the 1-2 and 3-4 shift forks, shift shaft, 1-2 and 3-4 synchro's, 1-2 and 3-4 blocking rings replaced under warranty. FYI, I'm pretty sure there is a TSB for the 3-4 shift fork...I don't have the number handy, but I'm pretty sure there is one.

I have an 02 Z-28 that had to be completly rebuilt at 1200 miles on the car. Was getting stuck in 4th gear and grinding in 3rd and 4th. I really had not even driven the car that hard. Now car has 2100 miles on it and 3rd gear is starting to grind. Going to have to go back to the dearlership again. Also feel like tranny is very sloppy. I would have got the automatic if I would have known all the trouble the M6 was going to give me.

I am on my third t56 and I have not put the mad mods on yet they are in the closet and by the bed. I am just going to get a stage 3 setup installed when they install my mods. If its going out now and I have never taken it to the track. It only has 21k on the car. 3rd and 4th gear keeps crapping and the syncros are always shot. One went out before I got a chance to street race with it. I have had my car for 5 months 2 months its been at the dealership. I just got it back yesterday. I love the car though. Wouldnt trade it for anything. Cant wait to get my mods installed. I doubt my tranny will still be together by month after next.

2001 Camaro SS, 6-speed. Purchased 13 months ago.

First tranny rebuild needed at 8,500 miles. (I bought the car new, as a demo with 6800 miles on it.) Car was popping out of third. Tranny rebuilt under warranty. (3-4 synchros & shift forks.)

Second tranny rebuild needed at 22,000 miles. Car was getting stuck in fourth gear and grinding going into third gear at 70 MPH (5,200 RPM). Dealer refused to fix it under warranty, told me in writing that the car CANNOT be shifted into 3rd gear at 70 MPH. ( ) Took the car to a different dealer, and they rebuilt it under warranty. Replaced most of the internals.

Third tranny rebuild needed at 22,600 miles. (Yep, just 600 miles later.) Car got stuck in fourth gear permanently. Dealership
replaced the 3-4 synchros. GM refused to pay the dealership for the warranty repair, and ordered the dealership to return the $$ paid to it by GM for the PREVIOUS repair as well. Their reasoning was that the second and third rebuilds were the result of abuse on my part (again, ), and claimed that their evidence of "abuse" was my previous complaint about the grinding when shifting into 3rd gear at 70 MPH. GM also voided my warranty, for the same reason--"abuse." The dealership stuck up for me and paid for the repairs out of their own pockets, shelling out about $6,000 in the process, when you count 2 weeks of car rental for me and two tranny rebuilds. (Pedigo Chevrolet in Indianapolis... patronize them any time you're in the area, please! )

Fourth rebuild is currently necessary (popping out of third AND getting stuck in fourth), became due EIGHT DAYS after I got the car back from rebuild #3. I'm giving up, and swapping in an automatic tranny instead.

See sig for my mods, nothing but bolt-ons. Never used nitrous, never ran slicks (though I do have a set of Nitto DR's that I never could get to hook up). I will freely admit that powershifting killed the tranny the first and second time--in fact, the third gear synchro went out on my seventh dragstrip run EVER in this car (even though I had over 40 powershifted runs on my 1995 Z28 and never had a single tranny problem of any kind with that car). But I never powershifted into third or fourth after the second rebuild, and I never powershifted AT ALL after the third rebuild. This last time, the tranny died after 30 minutes on a twisty road in southern Indiana, spent mostly in 3rd and 4th gear, granny-shifted every time.

Good luck getting any satisfaction from GM. They are NOT going to admit to any problems on a discontinued model, unless it's a safety issue. And the T-56 problems, while unbelievably annoying, are not safety issues. Sorry.

2002 M6 car here. Had my tranny replaced with a brand new one at about 12K. Now have 18K and is grinding when I try to downshift at any speed over 55mhp. If it helps any I had my clutch, PP, TO bearing, Flywheel and all hydrolics changed on the car at about 800 miles.

2001 M6...

Think I've tweaked a fork a little on the 2-3 shift; otherwise, no sign of temperament from the tranny at 20,000 + miles (God willing).

But then, I've never power shifted, and I'm a habitual double-clutcher on deceleration. Still, my T56 has seen a few missed shifts and some moderately strenuous street use...

01 TA 10k miles on the car and over 60 1/4 passes my 3rd blew(was grinding the last 30 passes)I pulled the tranny apart myself and found 3rd gear syncro trashed and the plastic cups on the shift fork worn and cracked.Replaced the 3rd-4th synro, gear assembly and installed a D+D steel shift fork.Total rebuild time took less than 6 hours(first time)and $400 in parts.Tranny shifts better than it did new now
