I dont think so. all you need is a bill of sale and your current insurance and I think your good. I dont think the License branch will issue a temp till the vehicle has been inspected or some ****

If the car is currently titled, find out if the owner will let you keep his tag on there for the drive home. then just mail it back to him. that way you wont have to worry about being stopped because a cop saw you without a tag and mailing it back assures the seller that you are not driving the car around on his tag after you get it home. Most sellers will not have a problem with it.

Put insurance on it from your home/auto policy.Have it in writing with you. Use a valid tag insured by your policy. Have the bill of sale, and notarized title in hand. I know NC will let you drive a car home this way. It may vary by state.

I have driven a couple home from various states. With nothing but a plate off a current vehicle of mine and a bill of sale (I have even been pulled over with no issue). A title helps but not mandatory.

OK I have been through this twice...
If you want to be 100% safe, you need to find out what each state you're driving through requires. Illinois allows you to transport your car home in state as long as you have proof of sale and proof of insurance.
I bought a car in MN and I had to get an "In transit" permit. It was like $10 and was good for 30 days and taped in the back window. I had to have title, proof of insurance, and driver's license. I couldn't get an Illinois in transit and bring it with me. They are only for getting out of the state you buy it in.
I bought a car in NY but it was a Saturday so DMV had like a 4 hour wait so I said F it and took the front plate off the other car that was with us. Basically thats asking for bad news. Don't take the plate off another car. They will bust you and wont be too happy.
Of course you had no issue. You weren't pulled over. But if you ARE pulled over they can throw the book at you.
What state are you going to?

Cali, then driving through nevada, arizona, new mexico, texas, oklahoma, missouri, then IL. I would not want to drive the car with no tags at all. that would be asking for trouble. maybe he will let me keep his on for the trip.
dumb question, but can i get a temp tag in cali. after I have the title in hand?
second question- taxes. is there a break even point (15K?) where I will have to pay more than a set amount on a used car private party?

I'm pretty sure in Illinois the tax paid on private party is based on what year the car is not necessarily how much you paid for it. The newer the car the more the tax is.

Thanks for the links Rick. I thought it was around 15K. KBB puts the PP price around 14,000-16,000. So I guess if I put 14,500 as the sold price, then it wouldn't be too much of an issue. I would be paying 50 dollars instead of $750! Quite the difference.

If you can get the tag locally that's cool, otherwise you need one from CA. Given that you are probably getting a Corvette, you will not want to chance getting pulled and it's a long drive. Congrats BTW.

Oh and Roy, you will pay sales tax here, and if you are buying say a 2002 Corvette, I doubt you can get away with saying you paid $14,500 for it, look at the thread where we talked about this a few weeks ago on MFBA. I think Pete G. said he got audited or something.

california will give you a little temp sticker for your back window with a number on it, and a date on it. that will say how long you can drive on it.
i just drove from Compton to chicago with no plates and tinted windows and didnt even get pulled over once, took the same route you have planned too.

btw, its like $15.00 and you'll be set. i'd also do a CAL562 form. here is the link to that.

Let's just be clear that I will actually be driving the car through Cali since Roy can't drive stick. I plan to have him trained by the time we stop in Vegas so I can get drunk.
