Why don't you move into Dekalb? Its a closer drive for work. 5 minutes for me.

You dont really get $8k back as a return... out of the entire credit you only get like $3500, which is suppose to go towards the principal of the house. If you choose to use the money for other things, you have to pay it back over the next few years at tax time!!!

Mostly because I would be driving to Fort Wayne all the time and since I only work 3 days a week anyways. I wouldn't mind living close to Dupont near I-69, since it would be a straight shot up to work.

That's not what I was told or how I understood it. I'm going to the mortgage company tomorrow morning to see how much I get pre-approved for since the last time I was in was about a year ago. When I'm there I'll talk to them more about it.

The 2008 tax credit was a note that you had to pay back over a certain amount of years. The new one that took effect in 2009 is a tax credit that you get $1,000 for every $10,000 you spent on the house (or so I was told) up to $80,000 purchase price. The only stipulation on this is that it has to be your primary place of residence for atleast 3 years. I just recently purchased a house this year and that was how it was explained to me at the time of closing. I was told that you can spend it however you want and there is no penalty.

That is exactly how I understood the tax credit! And also you might not get the whole $8,000 in one year but I think you can get it over a 2 year period. They told me that whatever is taken out of your taxes for federal that's where you get your money back. If you get $8,000 taken out in federal taxes in 2009 then you get all $8,000 back. If you have less than $8,000 taken out then you get whatever was taken out for 2009, and then I think you can get the rest of the money for the 2008 tax year or 2010 tax year. Don't take my word for this part, but I really think that's what the mortgage company said.

Adam, I hear that river haven has a couple double wides that are up for foreclosure. You could get into one of those for less than $2,000. And when it floods you could hook your house up to the camaro and pull it to safety, lol

Dang sounds like it would be a perfect house! I would probably love that house if it was only in my price range.

There are some nice areas in New Haven and I wouldn't mind living in that area, but not around trailer trash!
