I also skipped the VinX 3.4 TDC. I find the 3900 and 3.4TDC to be slightly less sucky (though the TDC is equally problematic) engines.

I have the 3400 and the 3100. Just got done doing the intake gasket in the 3100. Only problem on the 3400 so far is the FPR leaking.

Well, the rear subframe is in the car without a jack now. I have to build the rear brackets still (fronts brackets are in and partially welded), as well as the front mount to the subframe. Everything looks good so far. I'm also planning on done some boxing for the brackets, just for some extra security.

Well the brackets are boxed and burned in. Primed also. I should have the front mount done this weekend, then the drivetrain is complete again. Next up, dash wiring.

Got the diff mounts all done for the Dana36; here's a shot of the front mount (I utilized a poly bushing for noise purposes), and a shot of my welding. Not terrible for a 110 volt flux core (thanks Luke!).

Thanks Bob! I actually have to say that I learned the technique from watching Extreme 4x4 on the Powerblock. LOL. Still have a long, long way to go before it's "pretty" but at least I'm sure it's solid (I tested one of my welds with my 5 lbs sledge, and it bent the 1/4" steel before the weld broke).

If my tax refund is good, I'm thinking about picking up a TIG as that's what I really want to learn to do, and I like the idea of being able to better control the heat and feed speed. Plus, most of the stuff I want to deal with is stainless or aluminum.

How's the back and the wife doing?

Here is another techinique if you have spare flat pieces around. Weld a butt joint and then put it in a vice. Use a large adjustable wrench and bend it back and forth. If it breaks on the weld, you didn't get enough penetration, bend the metal more and you did a good weld. You weld is a little inconsistent and dirty (trademarks of gas-less flux core), over all you did a good job. Get some argon and solid flux core wire, which would help out. Keep up the good work, I would like to see it out on the street this summer!

Hard to get any better looking weld than that. on my FLSFC's, i cleaned down to the bare metal on the car, and even with no contaminents, it still wasn't a perfect bead like you get with gas/solid core welder. Let me know when your done, my coworker wants to buy it from me. I'm going to upgrade to a better unit then.

This was 1/4 steel, I'm not strong enough to bend that. I used my biggest wrench and all my weight and it didn't break the weld though. That's why I used the big *** hammer.

The penetration I'm pretty sure is a-ok; based on coloration on the back side (where I can get to the back side to see) and the fact that it was hot enough on the 1/4" to get some fusion welding on both pieces.

It is definitely dirty, but as you and Luke both noted, with the flux core, even with parts really clean (which I cleaned them, a lot), it still pops and spits and such, so it's hard to get it 100%. I'm confident it's not going anywhere though, so it should work for my uses.

Luke, I'm all done with it. I have a couple tacks to do at Nick's this weekend if that's alright, then we'll put a fresh spool of wire in it and get it shiny and new looking and bring it by.

One upside to gas less, you can weld in the wind with it. Don't even try that with gas.

edit: Anyone been to the classified recently? Holy crap that sucks. Ouch.

Does anyone have any leads on a mild LT1 build? A friend is looking for one. Forged rods/pistons, 355 or 383 range. Short or long block (decent heads if it's a long block) is cool. Also looking for a torque converter to go with it. He has some cash set aside for it.
